Nine Thousand Hydro Customers Lose Power

Tuesday, March 12, 2013 @ 10:06 PM
Prince George, B.C. – BC Hydro is reporting a number of simultaneous power outages which are affecting just under 9-thousand customers in the Prince George area.

Four outages occurred at the same time, 9:29 tonight. B.C. Hydro spokesman Bob Gammer says “basically everything north of the Nechako River is out. It’s believed the snow and rain we’re experiencing have led to the transmission circuit failures” in the area. In all 8898 hydro customers lost power.

The first outage affects the area west of Banzer Drive, east of Miworth Road, south of Chief Lake Road and north of Cranbrook Hill Road. 1273 customers affected. The second outage is north of Westcreek Road, affecting 2678 customers. Number three is south of Turner Road and west of Shelley Road, with 2770 people out, and the fourth is west of Rosemont Drive and south of Knight Crescent, with 2176 customers affected.

A fifth outage, in the 3100 block Blackwater Road in Quesnel, affects 5 customers.

Hydro expects to have power restored by one o"clock Wednesday morning.

Ospika lost power this morning too

Those smart meters gave a very specific count of who lost power, didn’t speed up the repairs at all, but now the numbers are precise. Perfect waste of money.

The Heritage area had an outage of 3.5 hours in the middle of the night.

“Those smart meters gave a very specific count of who lost power”

I expect a full report today then, with map and all.

Snow and rain believed to be the cause, must of been some sort of freak anomaly, imagine both of these events happening at the same time, better call Ripley’s

The Chinese were bragging last week that they can shut down our power grid through hacking the smart meters. This local outage was kind of what it would look like.

The BC liberals had billions to give to their friends privatizing public rivers for profit at inflated rates… and the BC liberals had billions to spend on a smart meter grid that makes the grid more vulnerable.. and the BC liberals hit the low and middle class with a regressive carbon tax to fund income tax cuts for the wealthy… so not very good policy all around and more about profiteering rather than hardening the grid IMO.

Yup, we lost power at 9:30. Heard the power back at 4 AM!(the phone chirped) Just off 97 north-Aintree/Inverness area.

It was a power outage, they happen. My power was back on at 4 am it went off around 9, so they called in crews, got to the problem, fixed the problem in 7 hours. Pretty dang good considering you can wait in the ER for Docs that are already at work for 6 hours most nights.

Just another example of aging infrastructure in this town starting to bite us in the ass. How exactly does rain cause power outages these days? Rain isn’t exactly a new concept, in fact, it happens quite frequently on this planet.

How poorly maintained is the power grid in this town?

just glad it wasnt too cold or 7 hours would have been a damn long time with no heat

Oh my goodness. One power outage so far this Year. Lets all complain about all our material items and whine about 7hrs in the cold. Sad world we live in.

Good grief – it was a power outtage people. It happens. If your house cannot handle 7 hours without power than you had better stock up on candles because it will happen again. As for the conspiracy theorists – shut down power to part of one small city (during the middle of the night when usage is low anyway) to ship south?
wow – just… wow

Yeah China is focused on PG for their hacking..LOL
