Prince George, B.C.-  A portion of the roof of Canfor’s  J.D. Little  Tree Nursery has collapsed under the  snow load.  The collapse happened around  6 this morning,  luckily, there was no one in the  facility at the time of the collapse.

The Nursery houses about  16 million seedlings valued at  about $3 milllion dollars.

Canfor says due to safety  concerns , only emergency personnel are being allowed in the area.  The company says it  hopes to be able to  put up a temporry shelter to house the seedlings at  safe temperatures until the   facility can be  repaird.

The company asks that in respect of the safety hazards and extensive efforts to save the seedlings housed in this facility, that memers of the public and the media,  stay away from the site.

Guess no flowers here this year either

I heard of another roof collapse this morning in the PG area. Anyone with a flat roof should be looking at shovelling it off.

Same thing happened at Ruffs a few years ago, trees freezing when they are not dormant leads to mortality. They may be a write off unless they got to them quickly

This is actually the cold storage facility so thawing of the seedlings is an issue before planting season. Optimal results are thawed 7 days before planting. You do not want the trees starting to grow before they are in the dirt.
