Cause of Roof Collapse Under Investigation

Prince George, B.C.-Canfor’s Vice President of Woodlands Canada, Tom Lewis, says they don’t know why the roof of the cold storage facility at the J.D. Little Nursery on Landooz Road gave way this morning.
“These structures are engineered to withstand significant snow loads” says Lewis, who says they are investigating why the roof gave way. “It appears the structural support for the roof gave way” says Lewis, who adds this has not been a particularly heavy snow year.
The good news is , there were no workers on the site at the time.
Once the roof collapsed, two walls gave way.
WorkSafeBC has been on site and has given permission to demolish the building.
The focus now is trying to save the 16 million seedlings. Lewis says they have found temporary homes at other nurseries for most of them, and the weekend will be spent moving those seedlings to their new homes.
Lewis says the good thing is that the weather in Prince George is cooperating “We have been storing the seedlings at minus 2 degrees Celsius, this is part of our normal process to start to thaw these trees out. So they would be stored over the winter a little cooler than that they also can’t be too cold as that impacts on their roots, and then, as we move further into springtime of course, we‘ll start to increase the temperatures so that they’re thawed out in a controlled fashion before they’re planted later in the spring.”
He says they don’t know if there is any other damage to the rest of the building at this time, and has not said if they will rebuild the cold storage facility.

Uh, snow loads? Uh, real wet snow, heavy?, Structural integrity compromised in constructing buildings?
Not a uncommon experince for Canfor I’am sorry to say.
It’s called KARMA…
They never rebuilt North central Plywoods when it burnt down leaving more than 250 workers without jobs… then they took the insurance money and put it into other facilities. People lost their homes and now Canfor is feeling the wrath of Karma…
Who knew Prince George got heavy snow every now and then??? Duh!!
Weight of snow combined with aging infrastructure. I’ll expect my cheque in the mail soon.

Let me guess, the Tooth Fairy had some involvement as well.
KARMA you bet… Glad nobody was hurt…For sure Canfor will blame somebody and somebody else will loss there job over this one
Work Safe was only on site to figure out how NOT to pay any compensation!!! Must have been really excited to find no injured workers….. Not that they would pay anyway!!
P.S. I’m very thankful there were no workers in there.
Maybe canfor will have to ask all salary personnel for their CSIP payments back. These bonuses were just paid to all salary in March. Hourly people imagine a bonus from 5000 to 12000 dollars. Yes they get 10% of their salary ad a bonus while we hourly barley get cost of living. Yes ask for there bonuses back to fix your roof .
KARMA meaning the result of a person’s actions.
I think what is happening to Pat Bell, Shirley Bond and George Iwama in the UNBC WIDC scandal fits better the definition of Karma. They brought it upon themselves by their actions.

what a bunch of cynical nobodies.
really4sure, you may be hourly, but you get overtime. The salaried people do no. They get paid for their extra efforts in the way of a bonus.
Your a great example of why unionized employees looked down upon, oh poor, poor pitiful me.

That about says it all for political BC. Back and forth, back and forth.
The province with the erratic electorate.
I think it is time for a few quotes about politics rather than the laws of mechanics:
I offer my opponents a bargain: if they will stop telling lies about us, I will stop telling the truth about them. ~ Adlai Stevenson, campaign speech, 1952
Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river. ~ Nikita Khrushchev
If God wanted us to vote, he would have given us candidates. ~ Jay Leno
People with Low pitched roofs with heavy ice damns, better look out! Some of these houses are gonna have waterfalls in them with a heavy rain
Of course the building would have been engineered for local snow loads, and how can anyone blame Canfor for this?
How many years did the building stand, and how many winters with more snow than this year? Freeze/thaw = wet, heavy snow, yes, but that phenomenon is not unique to this winter. The building has been there a long time, since before Canfor bought NWP&T.
It’s more likely that someone removed or modified some structural component(s) in the course of renovations, and over the course of time and repeated heavy loads, something finally gave way.
metalman.
Albus Antiquus Vir you are exactly right. I was salary for years with the potential for a yearly bonus. Some years it was nice, some years we didn’t get one. Never got paid overtime or stats and was expected to show up at a moments notice. Working out my hourly wage was depressing – even if I included the bonus. Finally had enough and now work for an hourly wage. Less money, but more peace of mind and time with family and friends. You can have that salary job.
