Site Selected for New Giscome Classrooms and Activity Centre

Giscome, B.C.- The site for the new modular Giscome School and the East Line Community Centre has been chosen.
Members of the community have agreed the site should be the old Giscome School site.
The $2.2 million dollar project will see two pre-fab modular classrooms and a frame construction activity centre built on the footprint of the old school.
The old school was demolished after it was deemed unsafe because of mould and wood rot, conditions caused because the old school had only a crawl space that was too close to a high water table.
School District 57 Secretary Treasurer Brian Mix says the problems of the past can be overcome with proper excavation and proper fill. “We will be building it up to the road level, so there won’t be any water table issues” says Mix.
He says it is hoped the new pre-fab classes will be ready for the start of the school year, “It’s going to be pretty nip and tuck, as it normally takes about 17 weeks to have the pre-fabs built, but that’s what we’re shooting for.”
The construction of the East Line Activity centre is a project of the Regional District. It will be “married into” the pre-fab classrooms.

That sounds like an extreme price for 2 modulars and a building smaller than a house on the North Nechako. Did Dan McLaren set this one up too?
Which members of the community decided this?? Must have been done on the QT?? It’s not the best setting for a school, right next to a rock quarry and a potential lime kiln production site….and pretty pricey too as has already been noted!!!
I don’t usually share personal information on this site but now is the time.
My grandfather got off the train in Giscome in 1916 to take up his first teaching position. At the train station he inquired as to the schools where abouts and was lead to pile of lumber on a vacant lot.
The first school house was a one room school and, as of this past weekend, I have located a family picture of the inside of the school house with my grandfaters name printed on the black board for his new students.
I am trying to get more history about this old school. I had been told that the school was moved from the original site but I can not confirm this. If anyone knows what actually happened to the original school I would appreciate any information you can provide.
I would be interested to find out if the new school will be built on the original site.
