Today is PST Tuesday
Prince George, B.C.- The clock is winding down to the reinstatement of the Provincial Sales Tax. Just two weeks from today, the 7% tax returns, and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business has declared today “PST Tuesday” as an effort to encourage businesses to register.
“We have recently contacted many of our members, and the good news is the vast majority of them have already registered for the new PST tax,” says CFIB BC Director of Provincial Affairs Mike Klassen. “The fact that every business has not registered for the PST tax yet is concerning, however, PST Tuesday is our way to help everyone get to finish line before April 1st.”
CFIB is inviting Twitter users to hashtag their tweets with #PST and #smallbiz. Klassen says since many small business owners are active on social media, talking up the PST today, could help them avoid the stress that could come if they try to register at the last minute.
There are more than 900 businesses listed as members of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce, not all would require a PST registration, however, the Chamber has supported a PST registration workshop as has the Central Interior Logging Association and together with the BC Chamber supports the PST Tuesday event .
Registering for a PST number can be done online by clicking here. If you would like to do it over the phone, the hours have been extended with staff ready to assist you Monday to Friday from 7a.m. tpo 7 p.m. at 1-877-388-4440
There are still a couple of PST webinars that can be attended on line , but you have to pre-register. The webinars are interactive and will cover such topics as general PST application, registration and the online services options.
The next session is set for Thursday, March 21st from 1:30 – 2:30 with two others set to take place before the end of the month:
Tuesday, March 26, 2013, from 10:30am to 11:30am
Thursday, March 28, 2013, from 1:30pm to 2:30pm

Yes, thnks a lot Vander Zalm, you jerk.
Thanks to Vander Zalm a peoples hero.
Small business in the service industry can now grow without the baggage of a regressive tax on revenue before profits. Maybe the huge drop in small business start ups will turn around and the engine of job growth will have some breathing room for the entrepreneurial spirit.
A 7% regressive tax eliminated on things like meals, hair cuts, business services, professional services, used goods… ect ect ect.
I guess according to the liberal logic prices will increase. Part of the song and dance presentation by the Liberals was with the HST prices would decrease.
The best news is only 2 more months of Christy and crew.
Vanderzam is an idiot. Jump in his court so you can all forget his scandals and screwing over of the tax payers of BC. Now we are all just friends.
If you think the fat a$$ government is going to take less taxes because we cried and went back tothe 40’s, think again.
We will all pay
Hey! It was “revenue neutral”, so they said. Din’t ya notice?
Thanks you so much Bill. And not only thanks to Bill but also to all the canvassers that donated hours of time and paid all their own expenses to win EVERY one of the 85 ridings in this province. Despite LIE-berals such as the despicable terry lake who tried without success to stifle and stall our right to the referendum. So now why don’t WE THE PEOPLE get to see the PST act and what exemptions we are entitled to now? Why has this information not been published? We voted for the same system to be put back in. After all before the election in 2009 gordo told everyone the HST is not on the radar. What an outright LIE. People voted for the LIE-berals on that premise. And that is why we won the referendum. And that is why in another 6 weeks all 85 ridings are going to toss every one of these 85 LIE-beral gordon butt kissers out of office hopefully for ever. Once again a big thanks to Bill and everyone who helped this great day happen. April first I am going out for a cheeseburger. First time in 4 years. Bye bye LIE-berals.
“Thanks to Vander Zalm a peoples hero. “
Given that the majority of the people are complete and utter morons that really doesn’t say much.
We would have been far better off keeping the HST when the government offered to drop it to 10%. Hell some provinces probably have a PST at 10% not to mention GST. But no, we had to cut off our nose to spite our face. Well done. Now we’re going back to an archaic system.
So true RUEZ! Staying with the HST would have been a far better option than going back to the archaic PST system. When someone as bewildering and odd as Mattyc supports the old PST, it makes one wonder what is wrong with us. More and more jurisdictions are considering a switch to the HST which is widely supported by many many economist, but here in BC we ignore the vast amount of economic support for the HST and instead listen to the whiners who know best, at least in their own minds.
Mattyc hasn’t gone for a cheeseburger in 4 years. Really? REALLY?? And yet, like sheep we follow people like him over the edge of a cliff.! Oh well, the people however uninformed they are, have spoken! In time, I’m sure that some will look back at this situation and ask “what have we done?”.
birdman, I agree with your sentiments. This truly sucks for small and medium-sized business. Thanks VanderZalm. You suck!
Have you read how he EU is trying to screw depositors in Cyprus banks, not the bondholders or shareholders but the depositors. Could it happen here?

Perhaps Vanderzalm and the 700,000 short sighted morons that voted to rescind the HST could be issued a one time tax to help pay for the overtime and extra staff required to go back to the archaic two tax system. About $10,000.00 each should be a good start. Care to send your cheque first Mattyc?
LOL–sour grapes, the carbon tax is next. Going back to the PST is a mistake, they should have adopted the Alberta model, no provincial sales tax.
The supporters of the HST never understood the issue. They basically just followed the lead of their illustrious business leaders, like Johnathan Winters the President of the Chamber of Commerce who categorically stated.
**It will be a cold day in hell before the HST is recinded in BC**
So much for the head of business and industry, and all their moronic followers.
The HST was a thinly disquised effort to have BC Consumers pay $1.6 Billion in taxes that was being paid by business and corporations. This whole effort was driven by the Liberals and their corporate buddies, and guess what. They got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, and now they are (as usual) whining and sniffling.
They basically stole two years of taxes from consumers, however now the tax reverts to its rightful owners, and they can go back to paying it.
As a result of the stupidity of the Liberals and their corporate buddies, we will now have an NDP party in power for at least 4 years.
The whole mess that BC is in is a direct result of the Liberals inability to bring in a fair and equitable tax, and be upfront and honest with BC Citizens.
You reap what you so
Good price on crying towels at Cosco, Walmart, Cdn Tire, etc; .
right on ruez.seems like there are a lot of sheep in bc.
Palopu: “The supporters of the HST never understood the issue.”
BS. The only thing the anti-HST camp understood was ‘How can we stick it to the government? Here’s a way!’.
Now we go back to the inefficient PST/GST when the HST would have been 10% by now. Way to go, BC. Vanderzalm sucked you in.
Palopu, I never supported the HST. I hated the way the Liberals lied about it as much as anyone. I also can’t stand the carbon tax. I think it does nothing to reduce fossil fuel use in our province.
However, despite the way the HST was brought in it is a better system to have one sales tax. Once the Liberals offered to lower it to 10% I was a convert and was happy with that compromise.
JohnnyBelt. It was the ex Liberal finance Minister that stated the HST was nothing more than a $1.6 Billion annual tax transfer from business and corporations to consumers.
Why is that so hard to understand. John Winters has stated that business and corporations will have their taxes increased by $1.5 Billion per annum when this tax is returned to them. So its pretty bloody obvious that the consumers were picking up the tab for business and corporations.
Furthermore if this tax was implemented it would be easy for the Government to raise it a few points every few years, until we end up like Europe and other Countries where they pay any where from 18% to 25% Value Added Taxes.
You can thank the HST people from stopping this tax crazed Government from implementing this regressive tax.
Companies who produce and export their products make huge profits by transferring this tax to consumers, much like they did when the 11% manufacturing tax was cancelled, and we the consumers got the GST to replace the lost business and corporate revenue. Again under the guise that business could not compete on the world stage. (same of line)
So sit back and pay your share of taxes and quit complaining. I for one have no desire to pay the taxes for Canfor, Weyerhauser, Rio Tinto, or any other exporting international conglomerate.
Wake up and smell the roses.
“Furthermore if this tax was implemented it would be easy for the Government to raise it a few points every few years”
Unlike the PST – they could never raise that eh?
If you really think the HST is helping defer taxes from corporations, you’re crazy.
Anyone who likes the HST can move to Ontario or PEI.
12.5% tax instead of 10% tax. That is a victory?
Whenever I look at the postings on this website, I always come away extremely depressed! I get depressed because regardless of the topic at hand, some people here are EXPERTS AT ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!
I feel so insignificant! But I’m sure some of our experts would have a solution to my depression, haha!
You don’t have to be an expert to understand how the HST screwed the average consumer, but you do need a functioning brain.
Corporations who export their products such as pulp and paper, coal, ore, ingots, lumber, etc; pay PST on the inputs to make or manufacture these products. This PST tax generated approxs $1.6 Billion per year for the Government.
By going to the HST these Corporations were able to get a tax credit for everything that they exported, and use this credit to off set the cost of their inputs. The result of this slight of hand, was that exporting companies ended up paying NO tax, when they used to pay a fair amount.
Considering that 80% of what is produced in BC is exported, you should be able to see how these corporations benefited from the implementation of the HST.
Small business’s were able to hitch hike on this tax and as a result they could save some money, however the intent all along was to generate mega savings for big business and corporations who are in the exporting business.
Its the large Corporations who got the most benefit from this tax.
Did no one notice that all the large exporting corporations in BC were deathly silent through out this whole process. Why?? Because they had their Liberal buddies, and the Chamber of Commerce, and other groups fronting for them.
As I said wake up and smell the flowers. If you think the HST was about small business, you are just kidding yourselfs.
It was about huge savings for export companies.
Time to put on your thinking hats, and take off your dunce caps.
Gee Palopu, I wish that I was a smart as you! I’m surprised that a person of your obvious intellect isn’t running this country. You’re just the person that we need! After all, you aren’t a dunce like the rest of us! You have all the answers! Or are they just opinions? If it’s just your opinion, then you aren’t really any smarter than the rest of us. Welcome to the “dunce cap” group! You’ll fit right in!!
Hart Guy. If you want to be as smart as me, then you should do more reading and less typing.
My opinions on the HST are backed up by facts that were gleened from various sources over the past three years. I have been on top of this file from day one.
I did not then and do not now believe one word on the subject that comes from ex Premier Campbell, Colin Hansen, Kevin Falcon, or others of their ilk. Nor do I believe any of the horse s… that is spewed by those who supported the Liberals in this vain attempt to suck money out of the people of BC.
Everything people need to know about the HST, how it was implemented, and how it was defeated, what it supposedly stood for, and what it actually stood for is documented and can be found with a little effort and research.
Sitting on one’s butt, making wise ass remarks generally doesn’t get the job done.
As for the dunce caps, they are available for those who blindly follow their leaders, without asking any questions. Most people on this site, and people in general do not buy into the HST Liberal BS, or any of the other propaganda they spew.
I supported those Liberals over the years, and all they did was screw me and many others over. They will never get my support again. The sooner the leave the better.
Palopu, at the risk of bursting your over-inflated ego, your opinion is just your opinion. You are not any smarter than the rest of us. I’m sure that there are things that you know about than I do, but I am also sure that there are things that I know more about than you do!
I am smart enough to recognize that there are always two sides to a story or an issue. In spite of what you think, you are not always right about everything. Most of the time, like the rest of us, you are just sharing your opinion.
A very quick search on HST policy showed a number of articles proclaiming both good and bad about the HST. The following link is just the first on the list that popped up. Of course, I am sure that you will disagree with the article, but I’m not so sure that your credentials are as strong as the lady who wrote this article. As it states, the author is Frances Woolley, a professor of economics at Carleton University, where she teaches public finance. I wonder what she looks like in the dunce cap that I am sure you will suggest she is wearing. This is only one article of many, some for and some against the HST, but regardless, I hope that you enjoy it!

The HST may very well be a better tax system for Governments, and corporations, however, it is still a huge increase in taxes for the average citizen.
Had the Government had any brains, they would have fixed the PST, or put in the HST with a tax on exported goods, so that the tax was lower and everyone paid a portion. They should have also ensured that the tax would not be increased for a number of years.
The way they did it, there was only benefits to the Government and Business and Corporations at the expense of the consumer.
This was a tax grab for the Government and a tax benefit for business and corporations pure and simple. Hence the demise of the Liberal Government.
I am not going to re fight the HST issue, suffice to say that those opposed won, and those in favour lost. The tax is gone on April 1st, and in my opinion the Liberals will be gone on May 15th.
Have a nice day.

Nope I aint paying for it. The corporations can pay the costs since these are the corrupt criminals that got this HST rammed into BC in the first place, without the consent of taxpayers. So please explain how you think I should send a cheque to pay them to do what WE THE PEOPLE voted for? You right wingers really are twisted in your logic. I aint paying ANYTHING in this province other then this internet connection in HST. I will shop else where. When the HST is finally EXTINGUISHED and we get our exemptions back I will again happily pay pst for the things mandated for that. I will stop shopping out of the peovince. And BTW I aint a lawyer or anything but can one of you HST lovers tell me where or how it became a crime to shop in another jurisdiction? Some of you where saying that a few times. Really bizarre that statement is.
Soon the HST will be EXTINGUISHED. The majority voted for that and it better get happening now. Thank you again to Bill and all the canvassers.
matty: “The corporations can pay the costs since these are the corrupt criminals that got this HST rammed into BC in the first place, without the consent of taxpayers. “
The ‘corporations’ will simply pass all of those costs onto you and me, as well as the costs to transfer back to the old system.
You’re not so naive as to believe they are just going to eat those costs, are you matty?
They are gonna have to eat some of it johnny IMO. I know they are real greedy but if they crank up the prices much more then they already have they might have to eat the unused made in china garbage too, along with the money they loose. Nobody will be able to afford the stuff. And the PST is gonna make these rich greedy exporting corporations pay like they used to. How does that cost get passed to you and I? It was afterall these particular ones that got this HST rammed into BC. Soon people is just gonna boycott. Just as I have been doing for the last 4 years. Wouldn’t that be hilarious johnny if that began happening?
How about greedy individuals who do not claim under the table income? The tax owing on this money rightfully belongs to the government. Kinda two faced to point fingers at the corporate world while breaking the law.
BTW Given that you seem to squeeze a nickel so tight that the beaver shites the servers in restaurants likely don’t miss your business anyway:P
