Dust Advisory In Effect for Prince George

Tuesday, March 26, 2013 @ 9:25 AM

Prince George, B.C.- A dust advisory is in effect for Prince George  as a result of highlevels of particulate, mainly  due to road dust in the bowl area of the City. The advisory means that as of midnight tonight,  Prince George Transit will be free until midnight  of the day the advisory is cancelled.

The provincial air quality objective for fine particles (PM2.5) is 25 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM2.5 rolling average was 10 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site and 6 µg/m3 at College Heights at 9 am today.

The provincial air quality objective for coarse particles (PM10) is 50 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM10 rolling average was 55 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown, 17 µg/m3 at College Heights and 38 µg/m3 at BCR at 9 am today.
Light winds and dry conditions overnight as well as clear skies contributed to dust accumulating in the air shed. Air quality is expected to be better at higher elevations. Levels may improve slightly this afternoon but increase again this evening.

This Dust Advisory is expected to be in effect at least until tomorrow afternoon, with an update to be provided at 4:30 this afternoon.

Parking lots like Canadian Tire, Home Depot and Walley’s don’t help by not cleaning up their winter mess.
Clean are group why not go after those offenders?

Where are our street cleaning machines? Do we have any? I can’t always drive down the road with two tires in the trails of dust hoping to whip up dust which by my reckoning will be blown off the road into the surrounding less travelled areas. Call it “dust recycling”.

Air Quality Advisories and Dust Advisories…. cough cough sputter…

Parking lots like Canadian Tire, Home Depot and Walley’s are not downtown and are too far to affect it.

They are, however, close to Gladstone School (which is no longer a school, so not sure what to call it) where there is an air quality monitor. It reads 17 µg/m3.

So, let us stay focused. Downtown “dust” is mainly a result of what goes on at the CN yards and the downtown streets and parking lots.

Breeze blowing westerly, dust heading into the bowl.

Dust from where? The parking lots mentioned as well as the BCR are south of Plaza 400.

The dust is from the City Traffic from Foothills, to Northwood Pulp Road, to Yellowhead Bridge to John Hart Bridge, and comes and goes depending of the wind direction.

The culprit is not CN Rail, it is the City of Prince George, who in their wisdom seem incapable of getting off their asses and picking up as much dirt as they can as fast as they can.

No doubt they have some arbitrary date like April 15th or May 2nd, when they start to clean the streets. Lets start tomorrow in the downtown and move out a spring progresses. Duhhhhhhhhhh.

In addition all private parking lots should be cleaned right away.

Not rocket science, but baffling for City Hall.
