Prince George, B.C. – It’s big, it’s armoured, and it’s the newest tool to be used by the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team in North District.
It is a Tactical Armoured Vehicle, TAV for short, and each RCMP District in B.C. has at least one.
The North District TAV has been spotted in and around Prince George, most recently parked outside Kelly Road Secondary School where the RCMP held their annual Spring Break Boot Camp for High School students interested in joining the RCMP.
Designed by the RCMP, and built by Navistar Defence Canada at an approximate cost of $780 thousand dollars each, these four by four vehicles can carry a full Emergency Response Team, plus another 1,000 pounds of equipment. They are equipped with everything from gun ports, to infrared night lighting and first aid equipment and the suspension can be lowered or raised depending on the terrain.
The flexibility in suspension and four wheel drive capability make the TAV a positive tool in this region where terrain and accessibility can be a challenge not only for hostage or standoff situations, but for search and rescue operations as well.
North District has had its TAV for a few months and Chief Superintendent Rod Booth says it has already been used operationally a couple of times. “It is a tool that will not only increase the safety for the officers, but protect the public as well” says Booth. He says an example for the use of the TAV would be a standoff situation, where the TAV could be used to deliver a phone. “Because the vehicle is heavily armoured, it could also be used as a shield, or people could get into it if we had to evacuate a neighbourhood because of gunfire” says Booth.
250News thanks our friends at CASTANET in Kelowna for allowing us to use the video report on the TAV that is in use in their region. Click on the video icon to view.

Law-abiding citizens are greatly restricted in gun ownership, but the cops are getting more and more heavily armed.
This is not a good trend.
I the event we rise up they want to make sure Government protected. $780,000
Ya its expensive, would be a lot cheaper if all the “law abiding citizens” would promise to stop shooting at Police!
Give it a month & it will be parked outside the rollerdome with a radar gun mounted to the dash.
That’s going to be expensive to fuel up. ;-)
So the bad guys use IED,S and Rocket Launchers, I am sure they can be made or bought locally, Remember The bad guys do not obey the law. Putting All your Cowboys in 1 Carrier, your body count will be high when Carrier is taken out.If uneducated cave dwellers can do it in the middle east, What can educated People with money and no regard for law do in Canada
Wonder if it will ever be used on road blocks, not. Hey how about the fun house on fir.
These four by four vehicles can carry a full Emergency Response Team, plus another 1,000 pounds of donuts. Cool. :)
And they need this for what exactly? Are they saying that this thing can be brought to bear on short notice anywhere there is trouble brewing? What circumstances in the last 20 years would have merited the use of a paramilitary vehicle? What difference would such a vehicle have made?
Cops use intimidation all the time, this is just that, intimidation. Hey RCMP members, you still have to exit the vehicle, just like a normal SUV. In driving up in an armoured car you have upped the fear and aggression factor (it would scare and rile me to see that trundling up my driveway) and made you into the enemy rather than the law. Forget the toys and go out and do your damn jobs.
Prince George is the CAPITAL of what again??? Welll This certainly convinces people
Caranmacil……is that the name of some medication ? Best take some before you are taken away in a straight jacket.
Why don’t you go for the real Thing
a ” Leopard Tank “
PG must me a dangerous Place to call Home.
“Law-abiding citizens are greatly restricted in gun ownership, but the cops are getting more and more heavily armed.

Forgive me if I missed it, but did we start a war with the RCMP at some point?
The anti RCMP bloggers on this site are a joke…
I suggest you go down to the ‘Hood” tonite (go late) and sit down for a cup of tea with those gang member scumbags…..maybe you can “nice talk” them into giving up their drugs, guns and other nasty weapons, and turn away from their wicked ways to become nice law abiding citizens with a real job. I’m sure they will listen to you… Or better still…the next time the RCMP run a drug house bust…offer to go in first to apologise that the RCMP are coming to take them to jail….I like this one better
Give me a break!
It’s called the war on drugs.
Every one is suspect.
Without the war on drugs, and its success rate to date, the RCMP would not be able to justify such an extravagant situation control device.
The only ones winning the war on drugs are the arms dealers and the lawyers.
Caranmacil your comments are amusing. This vehicle will allow the cops to get very close to an armed suspect without putting themselves in harms way. It will also allow them to deploy non lethal options such as bean bag rounds, pepper spray or Tazer. As a matter of fact they don’t have to get out of the vehicle, they can do all the damage they want for inside the vehicle. Last I checked intimidation can win battles, it can also encourage the person involved inthe standoff to give up peacefully. I can’t believe the negative comments on this site.
i suspect when the cowards we call the rcmp go to shoot an unarmed person in the future they will feel more secure in this vehicle, knowing if the populace should choose to defend the victim or identify the cowardly rcmp members perpetrating the murder, they will be safe from us.
Gimmeabreak: Well Stated!!
It is good to know that if a dangerous situation arises – anywhere in PG, the good guys should have the upper hand with this vehicle for their use.
Yes, I believe the police are still the good guys.
What a bunch of stupid, ignorant comments on this site. You guys make PG look like hillbilly heaven.
$780,000 each.. did I read that right, seats 6. Is there a need for more than one in the area ? THats a very expensive phone delivery system or a costly movable shield.
What kind of thought process goes into making a decision to by 4 of these.. when was the last time there where 4 armed standoffs at a time… or 4 hostage takings ?
I understand the need of 4×4 as just look at our city roads. IF this is a joke I am not laughing… just seeing a huge waste of tax dollars.. so we have built a few new police stations..and now this.. Will it ever stop ?????????????
I don’t believe they said they were buying four of them…better read it again!
We need these types of vehicles. Prince George IS the most dangerous city in Canada. It’s no joke.
i think the rcmp signed up for 18 of these, spread out individually to different districts.
i also believe similar vehicles that have been used by the armed forces have be repurposed to rcmp districts as well.
with new these and other new tools for the rcmp and ERT units popping up so many places i get the impression the ‘government’ is creating/escalating a war against us, the general population.
the idea of a well prepared police force is appropriate to me, the idea that this ‘government’ is arming and outfitting this gang of theirs we call the rcmp is alarming.
I want the army here myself, curfew imposed. Nobody goes nowhere. All these crazies do their crime when the sun goes down and when the streets are empty. Should be a dry town, RCMP at every block with AK-47 locked and loaded. Papers should be carried and produce them when ordered to do so. Prince George deserves this. It didn’t become Canada’s most dangerous city three years running for nothing. To many people not TALKING, great fear is instilled. They should be made to talk, with any means necessary.
Hey Cannabis, I think you got a bad batch.
Just sayin,
Aw c’mon guys (gals) this is great news. Now Prince George can host a G-8 or G-20 summit.
Well the good news is we saved 5 million not building the underground parking at the new RCMP Bld. The bad news is I hope they don’t find this puppy up on blocks if they park her overnight at said Bld
Gettin ready for the citizens revolt!
I wonder how many of you police bashers start your work day wondering if today is the day you don’t come home because some nut puts a knife in your back or a bullet in your head. But I guess you would say that is their job.
This vehicle reminds me of the fact that the “old” police station was partly built like a fortified station, similar to this vehicle being built as an armoured vehicle.
Yet the new police station is built like an unfortified, highly accessible public building which can easily be the main foyer for a performing arts centre.
Those two tools of the RCMP – their head office and this vehicle seem to be inconsistent to me.
Be great when they start to build Harpers Enbridg Pipeline.
Cheers
“I wonder how many of you police bashers start your work day wondering if today is the day you don’t come home because some nut puts a knife in your back or a bullet in your head”
Let us not get carried away. This is far from being an Afghanistan or Columbia.
Prince George is a very dangerous city in fact it is known to be the worst crime city in Canada. Wouldn’t it make more sense to hire 10 more officers. Wouldn’t 10 more officers be more effective or more powerful than this truck? Boys and their toys! Honestly!
Actually I just looked up UN stats.
Columbia is only the 15th worst nation for murder rate.
Jamaica is almost twice as bad and Honduras is three times as bad and on top of the list.
Canada’s murder rate is about 2% of the Honduran rate.
I really do not know why this vehicle is put on display. Someone may just want to try it out.
Unfortunate that it’s needed. Just glad we got one here.
Our province is spelled Columbia. South American country is spelled COLOMBIA. Ever heard of Rand-McNally? I can imagine a lopsided garage being built for this 4X4 and Chief Green’s Leaf side by side.
I absolutely want the police to be protected, as much as they can be, but this makes zero sense to me. I’ve lived here a long time, and I can’t recall the last time a member was seriously injured, shot, or even stabbed in this town.
I find it disturbing to see the militarization of our police. I think this should be something that everyone should be concerned about. Something has gone wrong with our criminal justice system when the police start rolling in the street with armoured vehicles.
The cost is disturbing too.
$780k for one vehicle? Add 20% to that for annual operating cost at an estimated 10 year life and you’re looking at easily $90k a year to possess this thing.
They have had it for 3 months and used it twice, so if that average holds, it will be used 8 times a year at an estimated cost of $12,000 a pop. I think that’s ridiculous.
Gus, only you would compare an armoured vehicle with the design of the new police station.
Still amazed how this story has created such a buzz. You would swear the ERT team is taking it to Tim Hortons and attending barking dog complaints in it. When shit goes bad, really bad, the police need tools to keep them And the public safe. This vehicle is a game changer in the way stand offs are handled, this thing will save lives, not result in further deaths.
“This vehicle is a game changer in the way stand offs are handled, this thing will save lives, not result in further deaths.”
You mean like the “Matters” shooting?
Sine Nomine has it right. There is no need for this type of vehicle to fight common criminals. The Province has purchased 18 of these so it will cost us $14,040,000.00 plus operating costs.
Add this vehicle to the police station on 22nd avenue across from Canadian Freightways, and God only knows how many police officers and black SUV’s and one has to wonder what the hell is going on.
Im sure the Police would have like to have this machine when they had the stand off around 100 mile with the natives a few years ago.
In my opinion this is over kill, and certainly not in tune with what one would expect in the Province of BC.
As usual, the Liberal Government, and Shirley Bond, who would have had to approve these vehicles are silent on this matter.
Lets not forget WACO and the death of all those women and children. This was the direct result of over exuberant policing.
Janet Reno who was the Attorney General at the time told the Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug police that they were totally out of line by having tanks, carriers, sub machine guns, grenades, etc; etc;. She stated that this type of armament went way beyond their mandate, and ordered them to downsize their armament.
The army brought in an armoured vehicle during the 100 mile standoff and it was disabled by gunfire.
US Humvee used by many countries:
Unit cost
Unarmored: $65,000
Armored: $140,000
Produced
1984âpresent
Looks like they could have bought five of these well-proven and reliable military tough armoured vehicles for the price of one of these dream boat ‘Fast Cats’!
Go figure!
Ah well, it’s only our tax money!
It is still a rubber tired vehicle, I think I know a way to slow it down.
How many prisoners will it carry to court so the judge can free them on a promise to appear in three months? Maybe make the arrested chip in for gas. That should lower the crime rate. Mounties have a city bus on speed dial to transport prisoners?
Geez. I’m glad I’m old . When I see this I can’t help but be thankful that there are not many years left for me. Seems to me too many people will not be satisfied until living here becomes one great big tv cop show.
Dragon master, that’s a perfect example, thanks for bringing that up. As you will soon realize when the IIO have exonerated the members of any wrong doing, that an armored vehicle option may have saved his life. It gives the ERT team the ability to get very close to a person with a weapon without having to result to lethal force so quickly. This vehicle will protect the police and will only increase the odds of a peaceful resolution. Like I said before, it’s a game changer!
“Gus, only you would compare an armoured vehicle with the design of the new police station.”
And only a certain councillor would post that observation. ;-)
So how many people think that was sarcasm?
I think most people think that the real uppercandian without an a has come out.
Where’s the OK corral? Be there at noon.
Allow me to point this out once more! If armoured Humvees are good enough to serve as military vehicles in Iraq, Afghanistan and many other conflict areas – why are they not good enough to be used as armoured vehicles for RCMP?
Answer: It’s obvious! They don’t cost enough. Too cheap and too much of a bargain at $ 140k each!
I wonder if those tires are bullet proof. I wonder what kind of engine is in this thing. I presume some sort of large (6 Litre?) diesel. That should get decent mileage. 10 to 15 mpg. Maybe it has a Duramax with an Allison tranny.
Totally agree with the assessment of the American Humvee.
Hummer – its built by Navistar so no Duramax… according to thier website it is a 6.0 and since Navistar builds engines in conjuction with Ford I suspect it is a very close relative to the 6.0 that Ford had in thier Super Dutys.
Looks like posts with f bombs don’t make the cut….woops. Back to council chambers I go:(
a_britishcolumbian
I read your comments and I think you are one very sick excuse for a Canadian….
Why the hell don’t you just pack up and leave for another country…if you can find one that will take you.
I am embarrassed that someone may just think that there there is someone with your mindset living in Prince George.
Hey a_BCer, you a conspiracy theorist?
Man sure hope you don’t need them anytime soon.
Call a HA, they’ll give you a hand LMAO.
