Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George has identified sixteen projects which will be completed this year under its 2013 road upgrade and repair plan.

A total of $5.2 million is being spent on fixing up roads in the city this time around, a figure that was attained after city council peeled back money from the annual reserve from the police budget. The projects cover everything from rehabilitation to overlay to curb relief work, primarily on residential routes and major thoroughfares both within and outside the bowl.  However, no major rehab jobs are planned in the BCR industrial site in 2013, and that has some who work in that area concerned.

Sections of Boundary Road, Penn Road and Milwaukee Way have some deep potholes which could do serious damage to a vehicle. The City’s Supervisor of Street Operations, Mick Jones, says crews will be doing some enhanced patching and some pothole patching this year, but no major road work is scheduled there this year. Jones says major projects in the industrial site were undertaken and completed last year, including the majority of Pacific Street, Great Street, Terminal Boulevard and a portion of Eastern Street “so there has been road work done in the BCR.”

Asked about a demand for road repairs in the BCR site this year, Jones says “There’s been demand for road work throughout the city. We try and prioritize the roads based on traffic volumes and road conditions.” He says there will be enhanced patching on Boundary Road this summer.

The city can now expect to get my bills for the alignment I’m going to need, along with all the front end work.
Anyone know how that lawsuit between ICBC and the contractor who didn’t fill potholes is going? Think us residents have a case against the city for damages caused when they have admitted publicly how bad this stretch of road it?

If the city is too cheap to do the job correctly, why don`t they rip the pavement up altogether. Boundary road is so bad vehicles have to stop to let oncoming traffic go so that they can go. GONG SHOW. Plain old gravel would be the solution without money

Idiots!

I drove the first three hundred miles back and forth for years on the Alaska Highway in the mid 70s. Never ever like the photos.

It seems to me that you have to get rid of the drainage problems first. If water is allowed to collect on road surfaces it eventually starts seeping into cracks, freezing, and expanding.

Good training grounds for the winter games obstical course. Futuristic thinking by Green and crew.

First class knowledgeable grader operators and a water truck was all that was needed. Could do 60 MPH in places. Windshields took a beating though.

That road has obviously failed. The structure is no longer sound. The conditions it presents are unsafe and damaging.

If a building were in that condition, the City would condemn it and not provide an occupancy permit to allow people to re-enter it until the building has been fixed.

Who audits the City for what essentially is flagrant disregard of their duties to the public welfare? It is malpractice in my books.

Can’t find Bill C 27 updated on CBC website. Lefty denial knows no bounds, eh? Why am I commenting here? CBC wouldn’t allow this question.

The above picture and other areas around the City show the actual disregard that the City has for infrastructure.

They have over the years, and continue to this day to spend money on non-essential projects.

They are as we speak collecting additional taxes of $15 Million dollars to throw into the winter games. In addition they just completed a $3 Million new office building on 18th and Ospika, even though they had buildings on the East end of Third Avenue that were in good condition.

The Police Station at a cost of $40 Million ($80 Million over 20 years)is nothing less than a national disgrace, and they are now in the process of once again re locating the Tennis Club and upgrading golf and curling club at a cost of $1 Million or more.

In addition they want to sell of the Pine Valley Golf course and channel the money from the sale into the Capital Projects fund. Wonder what Capital Project they have in mind. Could it be the Performing Arts Center???. Will they also tear down and sell the property that the Playhouse Theatre sits on, and use these funds for a PAC.

Who knows what the hell is going on, however one thing is clear, there is no point in building all this crap, if you cannot drive on your roads.

Our roads and surrounding area reflect the community. At this point in time Prince George looks like a **dump**

And you didn’t even mention the million plus to try and recoup $88,000 in lost parking revenue.

Nor did I mention the closing of the Quinn Street Transfer station, that we paid huge dollars for, and now cannot use for solid waste, forcing us to drive to Foothills landfill and pay $6.00 to use.

There is no end to how they can waste money.

Or $900,000 for a horse trail under the Shane Creek bridge…….

Look at the pictures. The road base is shot, there is no drainage. The road needs to be completly rebuilt. It’s a no brainer. I travel this road a dozen times a day and pothole patches usually last about 3 or 4 days. Mick Jones needs to be replaced if he thinks any different. This is undoublably the worst stretch of (paved)road in the city. Add up the tax base in the area. We need and deserve better. NOTE TO MAYOR AND COUNCIL… Get out of the box and take a drive over this road (Boundary,Penn beside Kal Tire) during work hours and see for yourself if you agree on how our roads management views this situation. This a heavy industrial route with a lot of truck traffic and it deserves better attention. Quit throwing good money into useless pothole patching and rebuild this road.

“Wonder what Capital Project they have in mind. Could it be the Performing Arts Center???.”

Yes!

It MUST be in place before the Games begin!

giterdun, thank you. My partner and I own a business in this area and that section of road is atrocious. We have to dodge large trucks, who are dodging potholes, daily.

I think Mick Jones’ comment about how works HAS been done in the BCR is rude to the landowners near the above pictures.

We pay a fortune I taxes every year and the roads out there (Danson Ind. Site) never get better. Can we boycott paying property taxes until the roads get fixed?

Anyone want to chip in for a cement truck with me? Pour a few loads down after midnight…

“The road base is shot, there is no drainage”

Where is the pervious strata? Can’t be that far own. Bore a 10cm hole and there will be drainage. ;-)

“Can we boycott paying property taxes until the roads get fixed?”

You can do anything you want. The question is, what will the City do?

If you are going to do anything, now is the time to do it. So, boycotting taxes after it is repaired will not help too much. You have to get on the National News, or the Provincial News at the least.

“It MUST be in place before the Games begin!”

It is too late for that. PACs take 2 to 3 years to design-build-tune.

At the moment it looks like 2115 is the target date. 200th City Anniversary.

Which begs the question, “Is the city still funding the PAC society?” something like 100k a year, throwing good money after bad.

I don’t often go out to the BCR site but I think that you are all exaggerating how bad the roads are.

The city spent a TON of money on a pavement evaluation system and if the road actually was in need of repair it would have shown up as a priority in the system.

I really hope that’s sarcasm that isn’t coming through my computer too clearly lonesome sparrow.
If it isn’t, come out for a drive here shortly after 4 in the afternoon when everyone is off work. Sit and watch traffic by Kal Tire. People literally stop and take turns driving through the only path you can take without hitting a hole – and even now I don’t think that’s too possible anymore.
Like I said, if my truck needs an alignment or any front end work the city is getting my bill. Doubtful they’ll pay it, but maybe if everyone starts submitting for damages they might take some action?

I submit that the road area in question is not only the worst in PG, but also the worst in all of Western Canada.

Its a heavy traffic piece of road with more commerce going through that intersection than almost any other intersection in the city.

Most pot holes are covering over half the road width and have depths below the water line of at least a foot. It is a vivid example of municipal negligence on a scale hard to fathom by anyone that doesn’t have to deal with it.

IMO Mick Jones should be released by the city for negligence of his fiduciary duty to maintain the infrastructure his office is responsible for. Anyone that looks at that piece of road can clearly see we need an urgent replacement of the management in charge.

I can’t see why the city at the very minimum couldn’t cover the area with a layer of gravel until the city has the money to fix the roads properly.

I think it just comes down to a municipal government that is beyond accountability and led by one of the worst council in the country.

They forgot to mention how University Way is going to be resurfaced this year. A gross waste of money, as I drove it yesterday, it’s clear that many other roads in town are in far worse shape.

Seems to be some favoratism regarding where the money goes for roads.
