Waiting for the Dust to Clear

Prince George, B.C.- As soon as the current dust advisory is lifted, the City of Prince George will begin its street sweeping operations.(at right, dusty haze greets morning sun in Prince George- photo 250 news)
Superintendent of Operations, Bill Gaal, says street sweeping can start once the gutters are clear of snow and ice. “Of course we will be wetting down the surface as we conduct those street sweeping operations” says Gaal.
He says the City will also use calcium chloride as a dust abatement during street sweeping operations. The calcium chloride is especially effective at this time of the year as the calcium chloride can prevent the water from freezing when the thermometer dips below zero.
But what can be done to reduce the amount of sand and gravel on the roads during the spring? Gaal says the City does use a lot of salt over the winter but salt is only effective when the temperature is no colder than minus 5. When it’s colder than that, aggregate is the only way to reduce the slickness.
City hall has wrestled with the type of aggregate used as the more coarse the material, the more damage it can do as it is ground into pavement at high traffic intersections.

I don’t see their logic. If wetting the roads before sweeping limits additional dust in the air the cleaner streets they leave behind should shorten the air advisory.
If they wait until the air is clear and then add some dust via sweeping operations it just lengthens the time that people are exposed to silica dust.

They have already begun sweeping. Vancouver Street was done a few days ago. (While the advisory was still in effect)

Defies logic dosent it lonesome . I am thinking the same thing . Do it now instead of creating more advisories later .
