BC Businesses Express Optimism on Economy

Prince George, B.C.- According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, there is growing optimism among small businesses in B.C.
The CFIB’s Business Barometer rose by nearly a full point to 65.7 last month in B.C. That climb was despite a tumble in the National barometer which dropped more than 3 points to 62.9. An index level between 65 and 75 suggest a growing economy.
There was some more good news in B.C. as the CFIB reports 28% of BC respondents say they expect to increase full time employment in the next three months. That’s a 6 point gain over February and, according to the CFIB “is the highest level recorded for BC in several years”.
BC is now in fifth place nationwide in terms of business confidence, up from sixth in February. Saskatchewan leads the nation for business optimism at 71.5, followed closely by Newfoundland & Labrador.

Just wait until the NDP get in!
So true Noway! We will be better off getting rid of those liars in Victoria ( Fiberals ). The govs own stats showed the NDP were better for BC and our economy!
So much for getting rid of the HST being bad for business.
Another prediction from the liberal lackeys that didn’t come true.
Hm, it seems to me I remember the anti-HST alarmists saying the HST would be bad for business. That didn’t happen.
It’s very difficult to be optimistic when I see the numbers of Government employees on payroll. As reported by the Vancouver Sun.
BC Government – 6,970 top income $307,730
Crown Corp – 9,991 – top income $999,9977
Health Authority – 19,0523 – $472,935
Local Governments – 9,856 – $382,954
Municipal Police – 2,368 – $314,042
School Districts – 10,146 – $218,284
Universities & Colleges – $11,891 – $531,088
I think the report only counted those employees who were at $75,000 and above as well. Mind boggling, isn’t it? And we haven’t even considered the Federal Government and all the Pension benefits everyone enjoys. Kind of sickening actually.
Absolutely right BYOB! It’s sickening that we didn’t stay in skool so we could get one of those jobs!
Don’t use government services then and there will be no need for govt employees on the payroll. It’s that simple! Then you will have the luxury of having corporations providing essential service at cost far greater than your tax dollars.
That 15% tax on alcohol in bars should kill of a few business for sure!
Should also cost them more than a few votes as well.
Do the B.C.Liberals really not understand that the idea is to stimulate the economy?
Not kill it?…along with your entire party?
Obviously not, because this party is indeed…done.
Hmmm so it it’s the high paid civil service management that is killing the economy, no wait……..it the blood sucking unions….., nope just wait til the NDP get in……., oops it the Lieberals and their crony capitalism corporate welfare. I think we give government too much credit for economic control. It’s the business cycle and the world economy. Party Politics is the two headed monster that seprates us into partisan pandering and distracts us from the real world;-)
How many jobs did the HST create? Be specific. (civil servants don’t count).
The HST WAS bad for business. It sucked over $ 800 million a year MORE out of the pockets of BC consumers, and there is simply no way that amount of purchasing power can be removed from the economy without there being an impact on consumer spending and business sales in those businesses serving British Columbians. In my own business we noticed it, a considerable amount of our lumber sales to building contractors dried up. Many people simply would not, or could not, pay 7% more for their services. Other businesses were hit much harder.
It seems to me we have a unique opportunity here. There’s an election coming up in May, and the BC Liberals once promised that the HST would be 10% if we retained it.
They also told us a number of other things previous to that in order to try to win favour for HST. That it was ‘revenue neutral’, for instance, when it clearly wasn’t. And a long time back, “Tax cuts work!” And they DO.
So how about exacting a promise from those who’d govern us, while we have their ‘feet to the fire’, so to speak, that the PST be put back to the 5% it was for all the years WAC Bennett governed this Province?
A 10% sales tax is easy to figure ~ customers can do the math right in their noggins, without even using the computer in their cell phones. And an equal amount taken in GST and PST makes for one calculation at the till instead of two.
So which one of these would be Premiers is going to make PST 5%? If Harper can get the GST down to that level Federally, why can’t the Province do the same Provincially? Lets get a promise out of these people that they’re going to do what
WE want, that they’re there to SERVE us. Not the big Banks, who are the chief beneficiaries of higher taxes that indebt an already overly indebted consumer even further.
Well said socredible.
The HST was bad for business.
It would be hard to find a resturant or a pub who would disagree…and that’s just for starters.
The HST represented the worst kind of political greed.
That extra $800,000 a year in fresh revenue for the B.C.Liberal government was one of the things Campbell and company knew about but just forgot to mention.
The HST was based on lies, but they made the fatal error of thinking the taxpayers were too stupid to figure it out.
It’s removal should tell a lot of B.C.Liberal politicians that we are not as naive as we once were, when it comes to politicans who think it is ok to lie to us.
Oddly enough…they are still lying.
It is not ok to lie and manipulate the voters….and if you get caught at it,you WILL pay a price.
More so now than ever.
The B.C.Liberals taught us all that yes…politicians can, will, and do lie to us…and far more often that we might think.
May we never be so naive again.
The politician who manages to get elected and actually listens to those who voted for them instead of a self-serving party leader, will probably find themselves elected time and time again…for the all right reasons.
The biggest reasosn being…”trust and accountability”.
Soemthingt the present government and Premier knows nothing about.
Does the cutting of GST put less revenue in the Feds pockets? Is this where our surplus went? Is this why our Federal debt has gone up so much? Just wondering.
Willow Creek Mine up near Chetwynd announced its closure this weekend laying off 260 workers, plus those that service the mine.
That is what a mine based economy is all about.
