Back to School Monday For District 57 Students
Sunday, March 31, 2013 @ 10:12 AM
Prince George, B.C. – This may be a four-day long weekend for many, but not so for children attending classes in School District 57.
The district is reminding parents that Monday, April 1st is a regular day of instruction for students and staff in District 57. Last Thursday, March 28th, was set aside as a bank day for staff to replace working on Easter Monday. Tomorrow also marks the return to classes following the two-week spring break.
Motorists are reminded to keep an eye out for youngsters who are getting back into the routine of being traffic aware while walking to schools throughout the district.

I’d like to see how many kids will be attending school tomorrow.
Having to go back to work after a two week spring break has got to be stressful. I’d like to see how many teachers take a stress day tomorrow.
APRIL’S FOOLS!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to say I am very disheartened by the decision to move Easter Monday to “Easter Thursday” I don’t get the option to move my Stat day to Thursday and I already working full time do not get enough time with my children, that I think this is an extremely insensitive decision by the school board towards working parents. I also have to deal with going out of town during Easter to celebrate with family so not allowing that day was hard for time to be spent with family. I realize it is not a designated Holiday but it has been celebrated as such for many years. I for one will not be sending my children to school tomorrow not only to send a point but because I value the time I get with them please consider this next year when making these types of decisions school district 57 as we all don’t get 2 weeks at Spring Break, Christmas and a 2 Month Summer Holiday to spend with our children. Please be considerate next year to your working families who only get so much time to spend with our families as it is when making such a big decision.
Saturday is also not a holiday. Yet it is a day on which there is no mail delivery, most offices, other than those which provide storefront customer service, are closed, and government employees who are not on shift get off.
Other than where the Monday after Easter is an official holiday, I think of Monday as being similar to Saturday.
Since parents who are not on shift can fall all over the place with respect to Monday as a day off, I believe it was totally insensitive of the SD57 to designate Thursday as a day off rather than Monday.
I would like to see all parents doing as they please to fit their normal schedule.
Remember, this is the age of entitlement, not the age of cooperation. ;-)
Easter Monday is not a true stat.
For those complaining.
People were asked if they wanted a 2 week spring break or not and it was overwhelmingly in favour of a 2 week break. The alternative to what happened was to keep Monday as a day off of school, but to make children go back to school for the Thursday. Would you rather have a week and a halfish spring break but you get your Monday holiday or get what you got?
No matter what they do it always comes with a good red whine!
“The alternative to what happened was to keep Monday as a day off of school, but to make children go back to school for the Thursday”
Okay, stay with me for a while on that.
Why exactly was that the alternative?
Tell you why I ask. I do not have children in school anymore. I am just looking for the logic of this which, frankly, is getting harder and harder to find these days with some decision making bodies.
So it seems spring break was 8 working days? And why is it 8, instead of 9 or 7? I ask that, because I would like to start at the beginning. Spring break, after all, is not usually centered around Easter, or is it?
These are supposedly some spring breaks across the country.
â¢British Columbia: March 15 – 25, 2013
â¢Alberta: March 22 – April 2, 2013
â¢Manitoba: March 22 – April 1, 2013
â¢Saskatchewan: March 28 – April 8, 2013
â¢Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland / Labrador: March 8 – 18, 2013
â¢PEI: March 15 – 25, 2013
â¢Quebec and New Brunswick: March 1 – March 11, 2013
I think Easter is at the same time across the country. Interestingly, no one decides when Easter is anymore. That decision was made a long time ago by someone else.
It should be easy to figure out how not to screw up an Easter weekend which, for many people, includes Monday, true stat or untrue stat.
Easter Monday is a so called “bank holiday” and commemorated by federal employees and probably some union shops as well since Sunday is a holiday, so the Monday following is a holiday.
Kamloops, btw was for 5 days – Monday March 18 to Friday March 22, inclusive.
Pretty simple, eh?
“People were asked if they wanted a 2 week spring break”
Overwhelming? How many were eligible to respond and how many responded?
Two week break doesn’t matter! It is only there for the parents that feel guilty taking their kids out of School for the extra week! The was in the flyer the kids brought home from school. You know, the flyers the parents are supposed to read!
I don’t understand SD57 logic…coast mountain SD82 didn’t have a problem with their calendar. They go back Apr 2.
With all of the challenges of a lack of teaching time, I do not support or endorse all of this extended time off for Elementary and Junior Secondary students. Most of their parents do not get this much time off unless they are teachers.
Maybe it’s more appropriate for students at the College and University levels.
Our educational system costs a lot of money to run. It does not make financial sense to me to have these facilities sitting empty for so much of the year.
