Liberals Unveil Platform

Prince George, B.C. – Premier Christy Clark has unveiled the B.C. Liberal platform for the Provincial election.
Labelled “Strong Economy, Secure Tomorrow” Premier Clark says the platform starts with the B.C. Jobs plan “and ends with a Debt-Free B.C. It’s a journey of how far we’ve come and explains how we will build on the progress we are making with British Columbians.”
Here are some highlights:
- Holding the line and then cutting taxes to spur private sector job creation, starting with small business, reduce red tape, secure opportunities in Asia;
- Control spending by placing a cap on government expenditures against the rate of nominal GDP and launching a core review of all government ministries;
- Freeze the carbon tax and all personal income taxes;
- Dedicate at least 50 per cent of all future surplus revenues to debt reduction; and,
- Dedicate all revenues from Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and proposed Kitimat Clean Refinery royalty revenues to debt reduction until provincial debt is eliminated.
Earlier today, the NDP unveiled the second plank in their platform ( see previous story) which is focused on forestry and commits $30 million this year, $40 million next, increasing to $100 million a year in years 4 and five.

At least they’ve got some sort of plan to try and pay off the debt. I’d be interested to see what the NDP approach would be.
“commits $30 million this year, $40 million next, increasing to $100 million a year in years 4 and five”
I think we have seen thier approach JB…
So they are just going to keep doing the same old thing, cutting taxes has proven that it doesn’t create jobs ! They ran on this mandate the past term and we have less employment than ever.
So much for the Carbon tax doing what it was supposed to do. Just a big waste of time and money that now they realize the average person has had enough of helping to pay for big business.
The carbon tax is about the north paying for the south’s transit system.
No mention of HST. The carbon tax is a joke.. Next.
“The carbon tax is a joke”
You’re right ….. I am laughing so hard already…. good one, P Val!!!!!!
You considering writing for Conan?
So now we have heard and read the Lieberals program for the future. It brings to mind the question, “what is the real program”. More cuts, higher user fees, higher msp premiums.
Trust Christy and the Lieberals, sorry not today. After mid May the only memory of the Lieberals will be of deceit and lies over the past 12 years.
THis is a platform ???? get real dedicate all revenues from LNG and proposed refinery ?? so build on proposals that wont produce shit for 10-20 years and what happen to the LNG promise about the money going to health care education seniors guess that was last week.. funny
The carbon tax is a sneaky fraud designed to rob Canadians of productivity so as to allow the corporations to claim the Canadian worker is high cost none productive thereby enabling lowest common denominator employment policies. This is the BC liberals ulterior agenda.
The carbon tax is a home heating tax for northerners, and a get to work tax for rural BC to fund politician slush funds to by votes in the south. It lowers our standard of living and makes us less competitive and its wholly unfair.
“The carbon tax is a joke”
“The carbon tax is a sneaky fraud…”
Is that the reason Dix wants to increase the carbon tax, the same tax Carole James condemned before she said it may be a good idea after all? How short is people’s memory?
BTW, the Liberals have lowered personal income taxes to the point that B.C. has the lowest personal income taxes in Canada. Is Dix going to undo all that?
Vote for me. I will lower your taxes, I will pay off the provincial debt (snicker), I will enrich your childrens lives, I will not waste your money, I am the key to prosperity, I will not cater to special interest groups, I will be the worlds only source of LNG, I promise a chicken in every pot…..the opposition is not promising you all this goodness so vote for me ………
Why do they have to unveil a platform? They are already in power and can do anything they want.
What’s the holdup? Why not make the changes immediately.?
And, what about the HST? Eh? Don’t really want to bring that one up, do you?
Carbon Tax? How is that working anyway?
And the NDP solution is? Increase what? Not!
The Liberals are going to be decimated in a month, and this is a good thing. Neoliberal ideology is unsustainable and make no mistake that fixing this mess the Liberals have created is going to hurt, no matter who tries. We can’t keep going with these foolish neoliberal policies. Saying BC has the lowest income taxes, demonstrates a lack of understanding of our present situation. BC is one of the most unaffordable territories to live in and operate a business here. That’s why non resource extraction companies aren’t flocking here as the Liberals might have you believe.
Interesting, the Liberals on this site have been criticising the NDP for not releasing their platform. Now it turns out the Liberals had not done so anyway. Typical! No wonder nobody trusts them!
Lunarcompg could you enlighten me on what the carbon tax is supposed to do?
The carbon tax is slowing down climate change (or global warming). Pick one. The carbon tax is revenue neutral just like the HST was and will create jobs. Well, not create jobs maybe.
So why does one assume if a person is against the BC liberal carbon tax that they must also support the ndp? Why is it an either or argument of last resort. Can’t defend the BC liberal policy so twist the motives of those that call them on it?
When you have big companies employing people to buy and sell carbon credits you know one thing ain’t right. Pulpmills get paid for being clean but schools are charged for pollution..lol
Carbon Tax monies from public institutions should be used to decrease public institution carbon footprints, not fund private corporation initiatives.
Clark talks about decreasing the debt after doubling it – “..the leader who supposedly holds debt reduction as one of her âcentral valuesâ would â presuming her government were to be re-elected â preside over a plan to raise the debt to $69 billion, a better-than-50-per-cent increase over where it stood when she took office.” [Vaughn Palmer, Vancouver Sun]
Let’s dispel the myth people. The Liberal record stands as fact – they are not fiscally prudent managers.
The HST was a revenue neutral tax, shifting $1Billion in taxes from corporations to the backs of working people. That’s why people rejected it.
Liberals are great at stealing money from the pockets of everyday working people and handing it to large businesses and corporations.
Liberal campaign slogan should be “Sell the Province”. Oh wait.. first undermine an institutions capacity, make it nonfunctional and debt ridden, then sell it off:
BCHydro – $1Billion in deferred expenses so it could be raided for cash.
ICBC – $750 Million in deferred expenses so it could be raided for cash.
Deferred expenses – the new way of taxing people. Defer crown corporation expenses to future years, declare current large surplus, scoop up the money, raise the rates to pay the bills later.
Shall I keep going…..
Time for a change in government!
Time for a change in government indeed.
But will the NDP do anything differently that induces MEANINGFUL change to these type of financial perversions we’ve witnessed under the Liberals? Does the NDP even UNDERSTAND the reasons WHY the Liberals have done what they’ve done? Besides trying to ‘look good’ in the immediate present, that is?
I seriously doubt it. Which is truly unfortunate. For both us and them. But especially US.
No doubt we’ll take another chance on them, we’ve little other choice this time and the Liberals have long overstayed their welcome and left an unprecedented financial mess. But the underlying cause of what’s wrong remains, with small hope it’ll be understood, and virtually none for it’s correction, unless some miracle happens. Too bad, such a waste of time (which is irreplaceable) as we slave to serve ‘figures’ with a $ sign attached to them that don’t even properly reflect the ‘facts’.
Opinion 1 so to what level should we reduce our carbon footprint? What is then accomplished? What happens if we go below that level? Is it c02 or carbon?
Carbon tax is a joke considering man’s contribution to c02 is about 3% of total and BC’s contribution is about .01% of that. Now considering there is no empirical proof how much effect c02 has on climate if any at all, the tax is a joke.
Something to ponder..
CO2 has a relative weight of 1.53 compared to normal air (1.1) meaning in gas state it sinks to low places and at any given time it makes up .03% of normal air. If this quantity was to go above .05% the threashold limit value (5000ppm) for people would be exceeded and we would all drop dead of 02 deficiancy.
Conclusion. It is pysically impossible by the law of gravity for C02 to float around in the atmosphere. When its at low level it diciopates and is absorbed or else we would all be dead.
Want proof.. Get a multi level gas detector and do some expermienting yourself.
This is why i dont buy the carbon tax scam.
Carbon Monoxide on the other hand is the one to worry about if you should be worring about any gas!!
Here is how the lies and misinformation works on so called climate change, good old Mark Jaccard, lies, lies and more lies.

I have three trees in my yard. Two big ones and a medium sized one. I call it my “carbon sink”. I sure could use a carbon credit. After all….
Too bad we couldn’t leave our “carbon footprint” on the backside of the guy who dreamed up that “carbon tax”. As an aside I am very glad I am too poor to buy gold. Look at all the money I could’ve lost.
