Highglen School Students To Move To Gladstone School

Prince George- Classes for the Montessori program which were halted yesterday because of a fire in the Highglen school will resume next Monday at the old Gladstone school in College Heights.
About 250 students were displaced when the school caught fire yesterday. School Superintendent Brian Pepper says it is too early to say if the school will be re built at the Highglen school site, that decision is expected later.
The School Board, administration, principal and the many of the families are in agreement with the move to College Heights. School board chair Sharel Warrington says at present all of the students were shuttled to the old school and given the large number of students from College Heights, the board does not see any major problems in them accessing the new school.
The Gladstone School which was closed in and around 2003 has been used for a number of purposes since that closure and school board administration say, apart from some minor problems , the transition should come off with little difficulty. Pepper says the Library at the Gladstone school will have to serve as a classroom until such time as renovations can be made.
The Highglen School building is covered by insurance through the School Protection Policy and carries a $10,000 deductable which represents a small cost to the school district.
Pepper says the Highglen school was old but it did meet the safety standards and legal requirements at the time of the fire.

The school board should consider having a bus transport children from the Highglen area to the new school, just for the remainder of the year.

At first I thought your idea had merit. But given that it is a choice school, I think that it should be up to the parents to get them to the school.
It may be a choice school, but there ARE local neighbourhood children who attend with no vehicles in their families…they walk to school so…
Soooo walk farther!
We have a family member going to the school and there is no way that we can get up to Gladstone. When they closed Ct Ft George and moved the choice school to Spruceland they provided a bus.
Mitigating circumstances I think would warrant a bus service for the remaining 2 months of the school year. This is an unplanned event and the priority of the school district should be the least amount of interruption possible for the students. Maybe the insurance would cover that as well?
Well, there are 250 students, it is a big change, the SD can not look after everyone. Sometimes the parents has to make a decision.
Stop whinning. if its that important for your child, you will find a way.
Good time to own a moving company. Open bidding?
buses in order for those that are in that catchment area. How about that idea?
I agree with Eagleone that there are mitigating circumtances here. I don’t think 2 months of bus service would break the bank.
