Family and Friends Plan Gladstone School Ground Clean Up

Friday, April 26, 2013 @ 4:04 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Parents of students of the fire damaged Highglen Montessori School   will be at the Gladstone Elementary School on Sunday morning to clean up the school yard.

Since Gladstone was closed due to low enrolment, the grounds have become a favourite spot for late night parties,  and a dog park. That means the grounds are littered with broken glass, and “Canine sins”.

The Prince George Montessori Parent Advisory Council and PG Montessori Education Society have organized a “work bee” to clean up the grounds to make sure they are safe for the students.

REAPS is providing gloves and garbage bags, but participants are   requested to bring rakes, pooper-scoopers, and long handled grabbers.

Gladstone Elementary will be home to the Montessori students for the foreseeable future as decisions are made on what to do about the damage at the Highglen Elementary School.

School District 57 has already committed to providing a shuttle service for students.  Students will be bussed from Highglen to Gladstone each morning and back to Highglen at the end of the school day.  Staff will be on site at Highglen to supervise the arrival and departure of students.  The shuttle will be in place from April 29 until the end of the school year.  This will ensure that student learning will not be disrupted during this period.

Meantime, the Montessori Education Society is still working on fundraising to replace the materials lost in the fire. Further details are yet to come.

Why is the school district not responsible for organizing this event? It’s wonderful that everyone is pitching in but if a filthy location has been chosen by SD57 as a replacement school then I don’t think it should be the sole responsibility of the Montessori families to arrange the clean up. Sure hope the kids can settle back in soon :)

Where do people get there information. That field is my back yard… Haven’t seen a late night party there in a … well ever… The occasional troop of noisy teens but no parties… People run their dogs back there but its no dog park in the true sense of the word. Rarely do I see any piles of canine sin in that field either… Who comes up with this stuff

Says much about those using the grounds. Dogs are not permitted on any school grounds in PG.

perpetualmommy. Maybe the parents of the Montessorri students are not the type to sit back and wait for government to do everything for them. They are a community and I have no doubt that their children will go further in life then those that sit back and wait for others. I assuming that some of the older students will also be there helping as well.

Dragonmaster, kids are not suppose to smoke, drink and do drugs but they do.People are not suppose to shoot, stab, bomb,or really kill other humans but they do.I think dogs in our school grounds are the least of societies problems.
