Cougars Wrap Up Bantam Draft

 Prince George, B.C. – The  Prince George Cougars made several moves today.   In addition to the two forwards and a defenceman picked up in the first three rounds of the Bantam draft, they acquired 1996-born forward Tyler Mrkonjic from the Tri-City Americans. In return, the Cougars part with a fourth round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.
 
Last season Mrkonjic (6’2”, 170 pounds) recorded 10 goals and 18 points in 30 games with the St. Albert Raiders (Midget AAA).  He also played eight games with the Spruce Grove Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League where he scored two goals and one assist. He was originally a fourth round pick (82nd overall) of the Tri-City Americans in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.
 
Other Bantam Draft activity saw the Cougars select forward Lane Zablocki (Wetaskiwin, AB) . Zablocki (5’10”, 150 pounds) registered 21 goals, 45 points and 32 penalty minutes in 33 games with Leduc (AMBHL). He added three assists in three playoff games and also tallied a goal and three points in five games with Team Central at the Alberta Cup.
In the sixth round (117th overall), the Prince George Cougars selected right-handed defenceman Curran Reeve (Saskatoon, SK).
 
Reeve (5’9”, 165 pounds) spent last season with the Saskatoon Outlaws (SCWB). In 24 games, Reeve scored 13 goals, 25 assists and added 64 penalty minutes.
The Cougars also selected forward Dylan Strahan (Hermosa Beach, CA) in the sixth round (118th overall). Strahan played last season with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings and scored 34 goals, and 112 points in 55 games.
With their eighth round pick, the Prince George Cougars selected forward Josh Curtis (Winnipeg, MB).  Curtis (5’10, 148 pounds) spent last season with the Winnipeg Monarchs (WBD1) where he scored 18 goals and 47 points in 30 games. He added 12 penalty minutes.
 
In the 9th round, the Cougars chose goaltender Kye Steinke (Regina, SK). Steinke (6’3”, 178 pounds) spent last season with the Regina Monarchs (Bantam AA).
Steinke is the third Saskatchewan-born player and the first goalie selected by the Prince George Cougars during the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.
 
In round 10, the Cougars drafted another defenceman, Dennis Cholowski (Langley, B.C.) Cholowski (5’6”, 126 pounds) played Bantam with Langley A1 last season.
 
In the final round, the Prince George Cougars selected forward Cole Young (Saskatoon, SK). Last season with the Saskatoon Frostbite,  Young (5’10”, 178 pounds) scored 14 goals, 36 points and 44 penalty minutes in 26 games.
 
“Cole has good size, and is a good skater,” said Prince George Cougars Western Area scout Ron Gunville. “We expect him to grow to be a big forward in the future.”
 
Young is the fourth Saskatchewan-born player selected by the Prince George Cougars in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.
