Prince George, B.C.- With the warm weather, the latest snowpack survey indicates the risk of flooding in the Upper Fraser is now high. The Upper Fraser was at 129% of normal on the first of May,
The monthly report notes that while there is an increased likelihood of flooding in areas with higher than normal snow packs, flooding is possible in any region if there is a long heat wave, or heavy rainfall.
Environment Canada is predicting the warm temperatures will carry through until Saturday for most of the province, followed by a slight cooling and maybe some rain early into next week. But the long range forecast suggests a high likelihood of above normal temperatures from May 15th through to the 22nd.
Normally, the snowpack switches to melting around the middle of April, but that was delayed by a couple of weeks because of the cooler weather mid month.
The good news is, the Nechako Basin is recorded at being at 82% of normal. The River Forecast Centre predicts lower than normal spring-summer flows in the Nechako basin.
