Dust Advisory Issued
Thursday, May 9, 2013 @ 9:40 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The Ministry of Environment has issued a Dust Advisory for Prince George due to high levels of particulate matter.
The provincial air quality objective for fine particles (PM2.5) is 25 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM2.5 rolling average was 15 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site and 13 µg/m3 at College Heights at 8 am today.
The provincial air quality objective for coarse particles (PM10) is 50 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM10 rolling average was 56 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown, 34 µg/m3 at College Heights and 66 µg/m3 at BCR at 8 am today.
Based on the quality data, the high levels are mainly due to road dust in the bowl area.
Light winds at night and dry conditions over the past several days contributed to dust accumulating in the air shed. Conditions may improve in the afternoon, but high levels are expected to redevelop overnight and tomorrow morning. Air quality is expected to be better at higher elevations.
This Dust Advisory is expected to be in effect at least until Saturday morning, with an update to be provided this afternoon at 4:30 pm.

Dust? And the reason we can’t get rid of the dust is what?
IF THE STREETS WERE CLEAN!!!!! THE DUST WOULD NOT BE SOOOOOOO BAD!!!!!!!!
I have a friend here now, visiting from Van and she CANNOT believe how dirty the streets are here this hear. She lived here once and said they were NEVER this dirty this time of the year.
Some of the main arteries that were swept were done pretty poorly. I see people riding bicycles on it and I can’t imagine how.
If we’re going to sweep the streets, why not do the job properly? Why is close to have the stuff still left behind?
Swept poorly …. I am not sure if that is the case. Particularly regarding the bike lanes.
I suspect that after the roads are swept…. then the sidewalk cleaners are coming along and sweeping the crud off the sidewalks and into the curb/bike lanes. A perfect example is Winnipeg St from 2nd Avenue to 17th. It was perfectly clean from curb to curb 3 weeks ago but nowWinnipeg has a lot of gravel and debris in the designated bike lanes along both sides of the street.
In many, many cases the sweepers do not pickup everything with one pass.
Then you get the skilled drivers that can’t keep their wheels between the lines and prefer to drive in the dirt.
Really, they sweep streets in Prince George. I have been enlightened. From driving around I never would have believed it.
What is this TERRIBLE stink in this city right now?????
Does anyone what is causing this terrible smell. The firehall says it is not dangerous, but she doesn’t know what it is..lol She says people are calling in with sore throats and headaches from it,but is not dangerous….go figure!
Oil refinery! They couldn’t find the smell last time but that is where is comes from.
The smell? Oh, that would be road dust and combustibles from non industrial sources. Since the underlying cause is the weather, there is absolutely nothing that can be done to fix it ;)
Anyone think the dried out and dusty cn yard might contribute to the dust problem?
Was driving past the university last night and it stunk to high heaven like burning oil, was not noticeable at both ends – think it would be worse at lower elevation if it was coming from the bowl area…?
Oh, and they were sweeping the streets in Vanway area last night, guess YRB doesn’t have to worry about dust advisories
And by ‘worse at both ends’ that is the bottom of the hills at University Way
