River Rise Monitored in Prince George

Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George is conducting periodic checks of river levels in the area to keep the upper hand on any possible high water situations.
The past week of warm weather has boosted the risk of flooding in the Upper Fraser to high. The Upper Fraser snowpack was at 129% of normal when the most recent survey results came in May 1st. And the Spring freshet has caused the water to rise in the Cottonwood Island Park area in recent days. A standby City Operations worker will be monitoring that location and others over the weekend to keep tabs on the water levels.
Water would have to rise another foot or so before Cottonwood Island Park would be closed. The Fraser River at South Fort George is about 1.4 metres below flood stage. The City did respond to some high water on lower Patricia Boulevard between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, utilizing pumps to move the water out.
We’re supposed to see a mix of sun and cloud then showers, maybe a thundershower, on Sunday with a high of 19, and then sun and cloud Monday with a high of 18. Environment Canada says it’ll be back to above normal temperatures from May 15th to 22nd.
