Prince George, B.C. – A quiet ceremony this morning at the Coast Inn of the North, saw 250News President Ben Meisner, receive a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal.

Presented by Cariboo-Prince George MP Dick Harris, the award was announced earlier this year, but today was the first opportunity for presentation.

“Ben has been a champion for the region” said Harris, “He never takes credit for all the good work he has done, and continues to do on behalf of this area.”

That good work  includes a role in the development of Cottonwood Island Park,  his stiff opposition to the Kemano Completion project in order to protect the Nechako River salmon,  involvement in the  Health Care Rally of 2000,  volunteer rescue operations on the  Nechako and Fraser rivers and  countless behind the scenes efforts to help people  who  felt they  had either run out of options or had no where else to turn.

“He has been an ombudsman, problem-solver and the voice of the ordinary person” said Harris.

Congratulations Ben….have you ever thought about running for mayor? Please|

Ben you and me will never be the best of friends as we have been on opposite sides of several campaigns over the years. But I also know you have always had the best interest of the region at heart. There are very few people that deserve as much respect as you do. This award is well deserved.

Well this is well deserved for Ben… I think the process for the award taints its regal dignity.

Being a Queens Diamond Jubilee one would think the process wouldn’t be handled by political actors, but rather a process of the Governor General, so as to remove the question of politics from the process and thereby enhance the regal dignity of the award.

That said its good to see when the award makes it to the right people for the right reasons.

Get a life yourself, I’m fine thank you very much.
