Firefighters Heed Wind Warnings North and South of Town

Sunday, May 12, 2013 @ 1:06 PM
Prince George, B.C. – Mother Nature is being a help and a hindrance to firefighters working two fires in the Prince George area.

The fire north of Pilot Mountain near Swamp Lake is fully contained after burning 40 hectares since Friday. Brent Bye, Senior fire protection officer with the Wildfire Management Branch says the Discovery Road fire is in the mop-up stage and will get a good soaking of rain this afternoon. However he says high winds are blowing down tress, creating a dangerous situation for the people on the fire lines.

The Buckhorn fire south of town, which also broke out Friday, has charred about 20 hectares. Bye says it also is in the mop-up stage, but adds there is one hot spot within the fire on the east side that is being watched. He says a hose line will be put in there this afternoon. High winds are again causing a danger to firefighters as they watch for trees being blown over. Bye says residents in the vicinity of that fire remain on alert in case conditions change.
