Libs Win, But Clark Loses Seat

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 @ 1:20 AM

Prince George, BC – The BC Liberals have won a majority government, but Premier Christy Clark has lost her seat in the riding of Vancouver-Point Grey…

After initial counting, preliminary election results show the Liberals have garnered 50 seats, the NDP 33, the Greens have won one seat, and one independent has been elected, Vicki Huntington in Delta South.

By a difference of 785 votes, NDP candidate, David Eby, has ousted Clark in Vancouver-Point Grey – capturing 10,162 votes to the Premier’s 9,377.  In all likelihood, one of the newly elected Liberal MLAs will be asked to step aside to allow Clark to run in a by-election.

Attorney-General and Justice Minister, Shirley Bond, won by a commanding majority over NDP candidate, Sherry Ogasawara, in Prince George-Valemount.  Bond took 58-percent support of those who voted, with 10,163 votes to Ogasawara’s 6,194.

In Prince George-Mackenzie, Mike Morris managed to capture 9,330 votes in his first stint running for the Liberals – 56-percent of the total vote, compared to 5,865 votes cast for NDP candidate, Bobby Deepak.

Liberal John Rustad took Nechako Lakes with 4,859 votes to nearest contender, NDP candidate Sussane Skidmore-Hewlett’s, 2,407 votes.

Independent Bob Simpson lost his riding of Cariboo-North to Liberal candidate, Coralee Oakes.  Oakes secured 5,459 votes to Simpson’s 4,933.

I’m sure they will recount that one.

that’s twice she hasn’t been elected premier. Time to change the system.

Or….Maybe they should choose a new leader…One that was actually elected to serve the people. Just a thought.

Christy beat Eby in a by-election after she was elected to lead the Liberal party following Gordon Campbell’s resignation and will do so again.

Here is another idea, as the premier serves as the provinces representative on the national and world stage what if the leaders of every party that receives a certain percentage of the vote is automatically granted a seat in the legislature. Then when you put your X beside a name on the ballot it is also a proxy vote for the party leader. In this election it would mean that Christy and Dix would get a seat but Sherk and Cummings would be SOL.

Interesting you think she would win a by-election, when she didnt win the election. I don’t think one can call a by-election so soon after an election, just because you don’t like the way it turned out, but I could be wrong. Just seems every unelected candidate would be scrambling to hold a by-election. She will be looking to bump out another MLA, which is unfair, as the voters of that riding elected the MLA they felt best would represent them, like it or not, in BC, like the rest of Canada, a vote is cast for an individual, not a governing party or their leader.

Brush up on your history, this is not the first time that this kind of thing has happened. An MLA will step down and a by-election will be called in due course.

I can’t believe the hatred on this site with all this election stuff…makes me not want to go on at all. I know I am sooo sick of it and I will never vote again. I will stay away from anything to do with election from now on.

Don’t be a drama queen nononsense.

What would happen if no one agreed to resign and trigger a by-election? Not that it is likely to happen, but I’m curious. The party could eject the sacrificial victim from the party, but they can’t force someone to resign.

Or they could vote in a new leader from the fold…what happened to 801?

David Eby won the election the same way the ndp could have won the election. He was hard on facts and took the fight to the liberals. Eby would make a good leader for the ndp now that he is an elected member.

Dix also won his seat so all Eby will be is a MLA critic for now

It brought a smile to my face when I fund out that Christy lost her seat. The results were not what I expected.

I guess that the Northern Gsteway will be approved now. Since her majority has increased.
