No Holiday for Long Weekend Road Safety

Friday, May 17, 2013 @ 3:48 AM

Prince George, B.C.- Victoria Day Weekend has traditionally been the official kick off to summer and that means more people on the road hauling campers and trailers  to get to their favourite  get-away spot.

The Prince George Regional Provincial Traffic Services & the Integrated Road Safety Unit, will be out on the highways this holiday weekend looking for motorists who disobey the rules of the road and potentially put themselves and others in harms way.

"Planning for your trip means more than packing your trailer" says Corporal  Madonna Saunderson. She says it also includes ensuring that your vehicle is in good mechanical condition, and that you are prepared for the highway. "Wear your seatbelt, give yourself plenty of time so that you arrive at your destination safely" adds Saunderson.

While police will be enforcing all the motor vehicle laws, they will be focused on the main causal factors of death and injury:

  1. those drivers who are impaired, by alcohol or drugs
  2. occupants of vehicles who are not wearing their seat belts
  3. those drivers who are driving aggressively, such as speeding, crossing double solid lines, following too closely and passing unsafely
  4. those drivers who are driving while distracted, such as using an electronic device.

Throughout the North District, Traffic Services enforcement officers have been scheduled for an increased presence on northern highways.

"This is all in an attempt to increase the possibility of apprehension in all our communities for those drivers who drive aggressively" says Corporal Saunderson, "We want everyone to have a Safe and Happy Holiday Weekend. Not a weekend marked by tragedy. We don’t want you to be in the hospital and we don’t want to be there to meet you either."

Stop them in the city too!

I’ll believe it when I see it!

everyday enforcement could help! on the hart maybe!! people think they can get away with driving like A$$ Hol3s because there is very litle chance of getting caught. we should have to pass a road test every time we renew DL

I agree, BCRacer. I think photo radar is a good deterrent to the Hart Highway problems, Boudicca.
Just my opinion. Bring on the hate! LOL

How about a gps system tied in to the vehicles computer with a monitering system, pressure sensors and cell phone recorder. Once a month the police will download your cars info and you will automatically be ticketed for every time you speed, talk on the phone, dont use your signal etc…heck throw in an ignition interlock device too. The parking commision can access it too as the GPS will tell them if you parked on street for more than two hours downtown ;)
