IIO Finds No Wrongdoing In RCMP Chase

Friday, May 17, 2013 @ 9:47 AM

Prince George, BC – The Independent Investigations Office of BC has cleared a Prince George RCMP officer of any wrongdoing in a foot chase that resulted in a suspect being injured earlier this year.

The IIO was called in to investigate the March 8th incident that saw a 27-year-old man hurt when he fell over a steep embankment during a police chase on Upland Street.  The man sustained serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

RCMP were called to an apartment on Upland Street shortly after midnight by a resident who reported a man banging on his door.  Both the officer and the witness reported that the man started running away as the officer was getting out of his cruiser.  The witness told IIO investigators, "he kind of leapt off" the steep hill, despite the police officer yelling at him to stop.  The injured man told investigators he blacked out and had no recollection of what happened to him.

In his four page report, Chief Civilian Director, Richard Rosenthal, concludes the officer involved did not commit any offence and no report will be filed with Crown counsel.

"The facts of this case appear to be undisputed," says Rosenthal.  "The officer responded to a call for service and attempted to detain this male.  The male fled, jumped down a steep embankment and sustained injuries."

"In this case, I conclude that there was no use of force and no police action other than the officer’s verbal command to ‘stop’."

No wrong doing in the Greg Matters shooting, no wrong doing here. No wrong doing in the Ian Bush shooting, it’s business as usual.

How does a 22 year old man in Houston, BC get picked up for having an open beer at a hockey rink, end up 20 minutes later with a bullet in the back of his head at the local RCMP station?

Why does a 12 year old Aboriginal girl, with 4 arresting adult RCMP officers looking on, have to get used as a chew toy by a police dog here in Prince George?

Yesterday’s announcement that the Commission for Public Complaints against the RCMP will be investigating torture and abuse allegations towards Aboriginal women and girls in Northern BC is most welcome!!!

“To coin a phrase in the interpretive vernacular, they are called “free ones”. Google “Fred Quilt in Williams Lake”. Nothing changes except the date.

Good point BCRacer!

Racer So very true, it doesn’t matter who investigates, there are those who haven’t lived outside of Canada who call this a “Police State”, just hope they’ve got the phone number for the HA so they can call and complain, LMAO!

Note to self. Don’t run from the RCMP. Better yet don’t cause them to chase you. This person was an idiot for running!

Harbinger, thank you for the google tip on “Fred Quilt in Williams Lake”, it was an interesting and sad read.

Bunch of computer hero’s trashing the RCMP for every situation when a waste of skin criminal gets injured breaking the law. If you don’t respect the RCMP and what they go through on a daily basis to keep even you, the internet ranting moron safe then your concept of reality the skewed. Sure the odd RCMP may be on a power trip or make human error once in a while but their contribution to every one of our lives far exceeds any of their faults.

Woah PGRacer… you went off track right after you typed “Give us a break people…”

“… the “commission” is completely different from the IIO! The Commission for Public Complaints against the RCMP is a federal body, while the Independent Investigations Office is a provincial investigative body.

Hope this helps :)
