Prince George, B.C. – It’s onward and upward for two-hundred-and-ten College of New Caledonia students who attended the college’s 2013 convocation ceremony at CN Centre on Saturday.

Included in that group is CNC’s first graduating class from the two-year Medical Radiography Technology Diploma program. (Grad Max Adams receives scarf from CNC Chair Bob Murray below) These grads were the program’s inaugural students in 2011.  As well, students received certificates and diplomas from a number of programs including health sciences, technologies and trades, business and management and academic foundation and human services, which includes social services and early childhood education.

This is the final convocation on the Prince George campus for John Bowman, who will complete his presidency at the end of July before moving to take up a similar posting at North Island College in Courtenay. Bowman says “This is a major personal achievement and huge milestone for our graduates. The goals, dreams and aspirations that motivated them to enroll at CNC are nearing fruition. The college is very proud of their hard work and dedication to learning.”

The Mary John Award of Excellence, presented annually to a CNC student who strives to live with dignity while serving others and the community, was awarded to someone who couldn’t be at convocation but was more than worthy of receiving the honour. Edna Cameron (pictured right) is a member of the Takla First Nation who is studying to complete her Education Assistant Certificate at CNC’s Fort St. James campus. Her goal is to work with children in a school in that community.

Edna is described as a successful student, mentor, leader, caregiver and a volunteer. She and her husband are the primary caregivers for their grandson, who is undergoing treatment in Vancouver for leukemia. She is now caring for her young granddaughter while taking full-time studies and attending to her family.
Despite a full plate of committments to the family, friends and the community around her, Edna is highly commended by the college for the effort she puts into completing all assignments with exceptional marks and finding time to help her fellow students with various problems. She regularly takes food to class to share with students and staff, organizes fundraisers to help cover the costs associated with her grandson’s treatment on the lower mainland and suggests medicinal plants that may help a student with a physical ailment.

Edna could not be at convocation to personally accept her award……she is in Vancouver with her grandson.
