June Is Gun Amnesty Month in B.C.
Thursday, May 30, 2013 @ 12:19 PM

Prince George, B.C. – For the second time in 7 years, the Province is offering a gun amnesty.
For the entire month of June, firearms, ammunition, or unwanted pellet guns, pepper spray and knives can be turned over to the police without fear of repercussions, unless of course the item was used in the commission of a crime. ( amnesty poster at right, submitted)
The month long program is being endorsed by the BC Association of Chiefs of Police. RCMP Assistant Commissioner Wayne Rideout who is in charge of Investigative Services and Organized Crime for E Division, says this program will help make B.C. safer
“Through this program, we can remove unwanted weapons out of homes, eliminating the changes of them being used for criminal purposes, or accidentally harming individuals.”
The last time such an amnesty was offered was in 2006. That effort resulted in more than 3200 items being turned in, including:
· 505 handguns
· 725 unwanted weapons, including long guns
· 96 thousand rounds of ammunition
· Rocket launcher
· Machine gun
“There is no way to know how many deaths, injuries and tragedies were prevented thanks to the 2006 amnesty” says Inspector Brad Haugli, the President of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police .
The rules of the amnesty are simple, says Inspector Haugli:
· From June 1st to 30th, anyone in possession of a weapon, firearm or ammunition that they are not entitled to own or don’t want anymore, can turn the items over to their local police.
· There is no limit on the number of items that can be turned over, and as long as the items have not been used in the commission of a crime, there will be no legal repercussions
· DO NOT deliver items to the police detachment “If you want to dispose of any type of weapons, to please contact your local police department (non emergency number) and they will then come and collect those items from you in a safe manner, and they will bring the items back to the detachment. We definitely do not want people to bring weapons to the front counters of the police departments.”
Inspector Haugli says all items turned in to police will be sent to the lab to be analyzed and researched. Once it is clear the item has not been used in the commission of a crime, it will be destroyed, or, possibly used as a training tool before being destroyed. “No firearms turned in will make their way back into the community” says Inspector Haugli.

Hmm… a machine gun and a rocket launcher? What ever are they going to use this moose hunting season? ; )
“We definately do not want people to bring weapons to the front counters of the police departments.” Maybe the cops could be more paranoid if you went in to a front counter and said, “I’ll be back, (with my gun).” Mumble the words in the bracket.
How many of these firearms will end up in police officer personal safes, Hell people, Phone a sporting good store. SELL do not give away rifles. Old military rifles can get you $300.00 to $500.00 or more. Lever action rifles go from $250.00 to $20,000.00 depending on the Rifle.Shotguns $200.00 to $15,000 if Grandpa bought a good one. There are lots of very expensive firearms in closets, If these unwanted guns have never hurt anyone WHY give them …Sell them… Hell look me up in the phone book I will pick them up and Sell them for you. Give nothing to the police for free
Exactly a great point DM. Why destroy these firearms ? They never hurt anyone ,people misusing them hurt people . There are many reasponsable gun owners who would be happy to purchase many of these especially some with collector value . Use the money to go on a vacation or buy yourself something nice .Of course if you do not have the proper permits it is illegal to sell possess and sell them , so Give them to someone you know and trust to sell them or keep them who has the right permits. There is no such thing as ammnesty in my mind. If I owned firearms illegally I would not turn them in, because now they know I had them and it is on record and could hurt you later on if you choose to get permits or own firearms legally . Just my 2 cents .
You do not need a Licence to have ammo in you posssion, ONLY TO BUY ..A box of Centre fire cartridges go for $25.00 to $40.00 NEW. Sell them legally at a garage sale, for !/2 price. Do Not Give Away, Make some money.
Here is another way to make Money. If the firearm you have is junk sell it as a parts rifle, Old military parts get you great money , Rifle magazine $40.00 to $80.00 Wood, Stocks you can get good money for. Rifle bolts Excellent money,Barrels can get you great money. When you have every thing that you can save of Firearm, THEN just give the left over junk to Police. By the way scopes or iron sights are all worth good MONEY

From the article: “Once it is clear the item has not been used in the commission of a crime, it will be destroyed, or, possibly used as a training tool before being destroyed. âNo firearms turned in will make their way back into the communityâ
DM: “Hell look me up in the phone book I will pick them up and Sell them for you.”
I’m just imagining the legal nightmare if the sold gun is used in a crime.
How much for the rocket Launcher?
Feel free to contact me if you want to get rid of your legal firearms and ammunition. I’m all licensed up and will pay real money for them.
“We definitely do not want people to bring weapons to the front counters of the police departments.â
Does that include staplers?
Remember folks, the police would rather they and the military be the only ones permitted to possess firearms.

What legal nightmare would that be and for whom?
It’s hilarious that so many people are afraid of guns, when they should be afraid of people. Guns don’t operate by themselves.
Maybe the police should have a motor vehicle amnesty month. More people die because of them than from guns.
Does Amnesty Interntional know about this?
“Remember folks, the police would rather they and the military be the only ones permitted to possess firearms.”
Don’t forget the para military conservation officers.
Donald Mackenzie sounds like a freeman of the land.
It’s Freeman on the land and a ridiculous comment!
Donald Mackenzie sounds like an entrepreneur. He’s seeing an opportunity and acting on it. Thumbs up!
I never thought I’d ever agree with Dragonmaster on an issue…must be a sign of the apocalypse. :)
Ditto to what DM & Harley guy said.
Selling your unwanted firearms or ammunition to a law abiding collector/hunter/target-skeet shooter makes more sense than turning them over to the police. It is easy to check on the prospective buyer, make sure he or she has a valid P.A.L. keep it all above board.
Don’t sell to anyone you are suspicious of. Make sure you have people around when buyers are coming to look, meet at a neutral and public location.
It’s not hard, if you have the will to do it.

Did I miss drug amnesty month?
