Friday Free For All – May 31st, 2013

Friday, May 31, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

Last day of the month, and  a Friday to boot!

We all  know what that means,  it’s time for the Friday Free for All.

You pick the topic, but, as always,  obey these three simple rules:

Keep it clean

Keep it legal

No Bullying.

Nice day, isn’t it?
=======================================

Here is an editorial about the lack of competence of Rob Ford, the “part time” mayor of Toronto.

http://www.thestar.com/opinion/editorials/2013/04/22/toronto_mayor_rob_ford_parttime_mayor_fulltime_flop_editorial.html

Read what his predecessor managed to accomplish in getting money flowing to Toronto from the feds – not only to Toronto, but to other cities as well.

I don’t know about that Gus. Not sure one can read a Rob Ford story from the Toronto Star and call it objective.

Some just say the guy cut costs and keeps a tight fiscal ship that respects tax dollars… others say he is short sighted and lacks forward planning.

Myself I think he has a lot of gumption if anything… jury is still out on his personal life when its all hearsay and innuendo.

The irony is he may as well end up owning the Toronto Star and get re-elected next year as of this point… populism meets or verse the rule of law?

Spent the last week on a circle tour of sorts to Edmonton and made a few observations.

Its a shame they have a gate that one has to check into in order to get access to see the WAC Bennett Dam. Use to be a few years ago one could drive up to the lookout and take some pictures… or drive right onto the dam itself if one wanted to. Sign of the times I guess.

I drove highway 40 in Alberta from Grand Prairie to Grand Cash and Jasper (reason for the long detour)… very cool in the mid section where one drives on the mountain tops, rather than in the valley… great views. Also great access to provincial parks that are maintained. I liked the way they have shoulders on most of their highways that could park a broke down vehicle without impeding traffic… must be nice in the winter months… BC could learn a lot from this kind of road standard. I seen some three story high oil rig stuff on the highway one would never see in BC (the jobs that go with that kind of industrial fabrication as well)… and what a blight the coal fired generating stations can be, and we pay a carbon tax here in BC is friggen ridiculous when one sees that.

In Edmonton gas is nearly 20cents cheaper than BC, and diesel 30cents cheaper.

West Edmonton Wall is a run down relic of its former glory… of course the roller coast is never working, but now the roof leaks and they have seals instead of dolphins, and the place is looking old. Pine Center with a major expansion in entertainment could give West Edmonton a run for its money if one factored out the big item tourist draws. Deals no better then in PG, so money is better spent locally for anything other than entertainment is the way it looked to me.

I went to the Telus Science Center and Space Observatory… that is a fantastic place to visit. Would be a great place if I was single to meet girls as well lol… very intelligent and engaging people. I could spend two days there if I had the time. Turns out they are trading up on their IMAX system soon and so I thought wouldn’t it be great if PG ever had something like that… it would be a huge draw… maybe for a Pine Center expansion one day….

Time Will Tell
:)

disagree with the west ed mall comment, ive been to alot of malls from vancouver to edmonton and prince george is one of the worst. i dont even consider shopping here anymore , the prices of clothes in edmonton are half of what they are here for the same brands, pine centre is the relic and no low budget target is going to bring up its value. on a side note the childrens playground at the entrance was a really nice addition!

The attractions in PG are zppropiately sized to the size of PG. If an investor wants to spend money on an attraction to draw outsiders to PG should be an indoor one.

You are right Eagleone Prince George is depressing it needs something to draw in tourism, there is nothing here for people to see, I say we need some young blood on council not these old almost retired not forward thinking people. Prince George needs something. If they can spend 59 million dollars on useless crap other then putting it towards something that draws in people then P.G. Will not amount to anything EVER.

Nothing to see in Prince George ? You mean people aren’t flocking here by the thousands to check out the caterpillar infestation ?

I just learned the latest government scam! I purchased a new home last year in PG. When I got my assessment this year it was well above the market value. I appealed this on the basis that it was high and the purchase price included 12% HST, it was lowered to the purchase price but not less the HST. It is case law in BC that the value of a new home in BC includes the HST. Talk about double dipping by the government, I will be paying tax to the city on a tax I paid to the provincial and federal government. How do we as tax payers ever get a head!

Is there now a time limit in which you can comment? I noticed a few recent news stories that there is no option to comment.

Zingy, tax payers will never get ahead, governments want every nickel they can get from you.

There has always been a 3 day time limit that I recall. Sometimes, if too many people post something that is against the rules of Keep it clean; Keep it legal; No Bullying, the comment section will be shut down.

It is obvious we should get rid of governments and run the show ourelves …… wait, isn’t that what governments are? … obviously there is something wrong with the hiring system of government……. ;-)

The Pine Centre Mall compares quite well to malls in similar sized cities. It is being updated continuously, it is clean and modern. Too bad Target didn’t include the kind of small restaurant that Zellers had. The Food Court offers the standard fast food fare which isn’t everyone’s favourite all the time. Other than that I have no complaints at all about the Mall.

As for *there is nothing to do* in Prince George – it depends on the season and personal choice. Pick up a copy of the Northern Explorer 2013 Guide and study it.

We have half a dozen golf courses, hundreds of lakes and rivers, all the usual civic amenities like pools and arenas, great restaurants, and so forth. We also have the largest casino and bingo facility north of Vancouver…we don’t have an *opera house* but I understand they will be breaking ground for one soon!

BTW, my take on it is that Rob Ford has been a buffoon and hot head before he was mayor and he did not suddenly change when he became mayor.

Please, anyone, tell me where he cut costs. That is what he was elected on but he failed. There was a 2% tax increase for 2013.
http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/01/15/rob-ford-rebuffs-firefighter-fear-mongering-mammoliti-floats-boat-casino-plan-as-budget-deliberations-begin

It is no different than here. 10% cost cutting was the platform as well as having a conversation. Neither of those two happened. The KPMG review was money ill spent. Council and the City Manager had no control over what could have been a fruitfull exercise if KPMG knew what they were doing.

So, Council could not even cut enough costs this year to hold the tax line to 0%.

Most certainly can’t have a “conversation” about that or much else. There is no transparency.

I thought we had an opera house going up on Victoria between 4th and 5th.

Bellingham, which is about 10,000 people biger than PG just got a wonderfull new 16 theatre movie theatre with Imax system in one theatre. Guess they watch more movies on that side of the border. Half of the moview do not even get here …… mainly yahoo movies …… ;-(

Pine Centre ….. nice mall, right sized for PG now and some time to come. Indoor malls just are not the thing anymore, even in cities that have snow …. which really is ALL of Canada other than Lotusland.

I agree 100% with the observation of the West Edmonton Mall. I was there perhaps 8 years ago and was shocked after seeing it in the early days quite frequently. Service “stores” had moved in at that time which is the early sign of a dying mall. People do not go window shopping for services.

Gus, I can’t agree more about the lack of movie theatres in PG… or at least Cineplex should be upgrading the current infrastructure. Those seats can only take so many buffoons hanging their legs over the top of the seat in front of them.

If there was one wish I have for PG (for movies) is a VIP theatre like they have in Coquitlam. Wide seats that recline, 19+ to get in, seats are designated like a concert, and they take your food order at your seat and bring it to you. Costs $20 instead of $10 but totally worth it to me.

Is it possible that Rob Ford is being blackmailed??? If so that would explain his not saying anything at this point.

The tape hasn’t surfaced as yet, and those people in the picture are not exactly your average citizen.

Lets see if the tape is released.

Last Sunday I was involved in an accident where a woman ran the stop sign and I T-boned her miraculously no damage was done to my truck but her car was heavily damaged while we were there another woman ran the same stop sign and almost caused another wreck both women were in there 40’s and neither stopped for the stop sign. About an hr later a friend of mine got into an accident at the same place with another female driver who also ran the stop sign.

Yesterday at Pine Centre Mall there was another accident a car driven by a female was T-boned because she ran the stop sign. I know there are bad men drivers but what the hell is up with all these accidents with female drivers who run stop signs.

As eagel wrote, one does not know what is the truth. The stories are bizarre.

That being said, NORMAL people, let alone Mayors of major cities in Canada, do not attract even those kinds of rumours. He is most certainly not handling it very well.

Indicator of that?? …. people around him leaving.

He has money …. so one of the rumours is that he bought the video (blackmail??) and destroyed it …… how many coipies were there??

Apparently video on cell phones are difficult to doctor up.

High up on my wish list for P.G. is a “better” movie theater. Ft. St. John has a nicer one! We always go to a movie in Edmonton. Nice seats, better screens and sound, and clean. Maybe now that there are newer systems than IMAX, we will get one.

I agree with the above comments about the West Ed Mall, we avoid it and shop at South Edmonton Commons. The savings of shopping in Edmonton are not worth the price of getting there, however they have many more stores than we do, and that’s why we go.

What the heck is up with ANYONE “running” stop signs. I have seen that maybe once in the last few decades. I often see cars “slowly” going through stop signs.

I disagree with the comment about the children’s playground at the entrance to the Mall! It is just awful, and I have talked to alot of people who agree with me. It is noisy and I have never heard of such a thing! It is anything but relaxing….everyone does not have children and should not have to put up with this noisy thing at the mall! A lot of people go to a mall and like to relax…you can’t even relax by the Drummer Boy anymore while you are eating, because of THE NOISY PLAYGROUND right there!!! I have never heard of such a thing.

That’s what I normally see to Gus but both women were going well above 30k when they went through the stop sign it actually scares me to know that they do that with no regard for others

Would be nice if there was some sort of eatery in Fort George park.

For those people who keep saying there is nothing to do or see in PG give your head a shake and open your eyes. Just what do you people want?

CONGRATS to all the GRADS at UNBC today. wish them much success..

Yeahhh would be nice if there was a thing daily where we can comment bout current events that 250 doesn’t have a story written bout it.

Id like to thank the Inwood Trucking load of short wood coming down the Hart this morning during rush hour in the left lane all the way from Chief Lake road. It was nice how you managed to stay right beside another load of wood that was in the right lane and, if you didnt notice, you had approximately 40 cars lined up behind you. Were you turning left eventually? We will never know as you crammed yourself into the right lane at the last second when you realized the scales were open… I was early and didnt really care but some of the other drivers around me looked ready to drag your a$$ out of the truck…

Too funny. Those guys are living proof that you don’t need to be smart to get your driver’s license.

I’ve noticed lately that the “Lo-Bar” people don’t seem to understand the rules of the road; whether they’re in their pickups or driving a flat bed they always seem to be in the left lane on the Hart or speeding on 50kmh roads.

Poplar should be considered an invasive species in residential areas. My neighbor’s tree sends its roots across my entire back yard, sends up hundreds of shoots and now is raining worms all over my decoratives. Two are certainly dead. Poplar trees should be considered the same as Canada Thistle when it comes to small city yards.

in the spirit of thanking drivers …. I would like to to thank the Elite driver yesterday afternoon at about 415pm that still doesnt know what the word Yeild means … I was comming off the bridge to go up the Hart … I got to the circle long before he did .. he was coming out of the mills so .. he gunned it to squeeze in before me thus forcing me to jam on my binders and cause the guy behind me .. who also was in the circle before the Elite driver to almost run into my rear.
So here is a big Giant “F U” to unprofessional drivers. I use the term Unprofessional because there are many professional drivers … and about 5% of that number are assholes that shouldnt be behind the wheel of a Prius let alone a 50 ton truck … to those 5% I direct my giant “F U”

Polar is considered the Prairies largest weed ..

Ah the Cineplex… Understaffed, more than a bit tired and a 50/50 chance of having a decent viewing experience. Went to Star Trek last week. Sat in the last row. I gather there must be some new edict about not closing the inner doors of the companionway. After 20 mins I got up and closed them. half an hour later they were opened by staff. So the back row was treated to glow from the hallway. I get the impression that they are not willing to make too many improvements beyond keeping up with the basics.

Seeing as they have all the stats from every show I’d imagine unless there is a sizable increase in attendance not much will happen there. In a way it was too bad it was not built some years later than it was as stadium seating would be great.

With home theather technology as good as it is today, I don’t understand what the appeal of going to an overpriced movie and paying for overpriced concessions is.

Plus, you get to watch a bunch of commercials before it starts! What a deal!

The real estate affordability comments were closed early. Real estate in PG is overpriced and due for a correction. Outside of Vancouver, new homes are the same or less. $500-700K in PG? Laughable. Also, the index uses a 25% down payment, a very small percentage of purchasers put down that much. Average mortgage rates 7-8%. Real estate should follow wages. I don’t care, my house is mine not the banks. When the extraordinary rates return to normal, and the bond market is indicating they will, there will be pain for the overextended.

Received a letter & cheque from Aurico Gold out of Ontario for $3,992.90 yesterday. Took it to the RCMP this morning – it’s definitely a “secret shopper” scam.

Some of the English in the letter is mangled…eg: “in other to activate your check.”

No return address on the envelope, but it was mailed in Canada.

The “cheque” was drawn on the Bank of Nova Scotia.

Aurico Gold Inc.
PO Box 187
259 Matheson St.
Matachewan, ON P0K 1M0

Some of the places that they are saying to secret shop at are: Walmart, K-Mart, Home Depot, Sears, JC Penny and Best Buy.

If you know of anyone getting one of these cheques, they need a heads-up that this is definitely not legit.

On the topic of gas prices – I know for a fact that several gas stations who raised prices to 142.9, and even during the last jump in price, did not receive fuel deliveries the day of or even the day after prices were raised. No excuse why prices should be raised until they get a delivery.

On another note – my rant for the day. Driving home on 15th a couple days ago, heading towards Foothills (which would be westbound I guess) there was a cyclist also on 15th in the right hand lane holding up traffic. I don’t have a problem with cyclists, but when there is a side road parallel to a main road why would you be on the main road where there is no bike lane? I’m pretty sure there is a sign pointing cyclists to the side road as well.
Ok, rant over :)

“The real estate affordability comments were closed early. Real estate in PG is overpriced and due for a correction. Outside of Vancouver, new homes are the same or less. $500-700K in PG? Laughable.”

The average price in pg is somewhere around $230K. I’m not sure where you pulled $500-700K from.

So everyone still enjoying your carbon tax on heating and travel. Here is an interesting read on the costs and failures of “green”

http://nofrakkingconsensus.com/2013/05/29/green-energy-unicorns/

Germany which is held out there as a green economy is now building coal fired power plants as fast as possible since they have found green energy just does not cut it.

I phoned a psychic hotline.I said, “Who am I and what’s my problem?” They couldn’t tell me.

Do I believe in UFOs and little green men? No. Show me either. Don’t show me a picture, a film, a video and don’t tell me any stories. Show me a real unfaked honest to goodness flying saucer. Haven’t seen one yet in all these years. How long will I have to wait to see the Rob Ford cellphone recording? I don’t want any more stories, excuses, accusations, opinions, character assassinations, bad mouthing, ongoing partisan remarks, etc. I just want tangible proof. I will wait before I pass judgement. How odd, eh? Waiting for proof.

Gus, re Rob Ford in Toronto(center of the universe) Who cares.

Anybody heard from Mattyc :-)

Harb, the green men are golfing with the Canucks.
Ford, I think, has some big time political enemies who just want him gone.

I agree with the comments above that state that Prince George is what you make of it. There are a lot of things to do if enjoy the great outdoors. I can’t believe that people complain about the lack of shopping in PG. If you judge a place by the amount of shopping one can do, then I say you should expand your horizons a bit. I have never understood how people can make shopping a hobby.

Seeing how others are complaining about certain businesses, I shall join in on the fray. Arctic Manufacturing on the Hart Highway loaded up their wood furnace last night (around 9:30 or 10 p.m.) and let it smolder all night filling the valley with wood smoke. I live in a neighborhood nearby and it wasn’t cold enough to use a furnace in my area last night so I am pretty sure Arctic Man. was using the wood furnace to heat their building. Were they burning something they shouldn’t have?!

I have complained to the City and the Ministry of Environment repeatedly about this business and they have been talked to by those gov. organizations but Arctic Man. keeps polluting the Hart Hwy. with their wood smoke, even when there are air pollution warnings issued by the City.

I am pretty sure the owner of Arctic Man. wouldn’t like if someone came into his neighborhood and polluted his airshed.

On another note, our light industrial city taxes went up $3,000.00 this year. Thanks for keeping costs/taxes down Ms. Green!

In my above rant, I meant to write “I am pretty sure Arctic Man. was NOT using the wood furnace to heat their building.”

@ whelen and bowzone; poplar trees should be considered weeds? No problem, just bring in the oil industry, if we had enough tar sands oil under our feet, poplar trees and everything else would be considered “overburden”. Every tree, blade of grass, house, street, underground infrastructure, and even the top soil, would all be bulldozed away to expose the precious oily sand sludge.

It’s a good thing we can complain about a poplar tree, because in a growing part of Alberta, there is nothing naturally living (alive) to complain about!

No comments on the news article that BC has rejected the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal?! I would rejoice as I believe this pipeline is a bad idea but I don’t know if BC’s opinion means anything to the federal government. Here’s to hoping it does.

What a tragedy back East where 4 paramedics were killed in a helicopter crash. May them R.I.P. My condolences to their families. :(

Except for the little matter of the video Mayor Green and Mayor Ford are two peas in a pod.

-Both promised big savings and neither delivered

-Both have a poor relationship with media – Sun in TO – O250 in PG

-A Pit bull on council has their back whether they are right or wrong – Doug in TO – Stoltz in PG.

Could be that we have a new twin city that has a lot cheaper airfare to get to.

I just wanted to weigh in on the whole Prince George movie theatre conversation. What is with our seat layout??! Why are they on such a shallow slope? Every movie theatre I’ve gone to south of Prince George (specifically Victoria and Vancouver) is much more vertical in the seating, so no matter where you sit you get a full view of the screen and no big heads in front of you. Even the front rows are far enough back that you don’t crane your neck to look at the screen. Who designed our theatre? Would be nice if there was a bit of theatre competition as well… Rather than the same 6 screens to choose from every night of the week.

Also, congratulations to the UNBC grads of 2013! Good luck on your future endeavours!

Any comments about the kids play ground when you come into the main door of Pine Center Mall?? I for one think it is just a noisy awful thing for our nice mall..any other views on this??

People1st: “It’s a good thing we can complain about a poplar tree, because in a growing part of Alberta, there is nothing naturally living (alive) to complain about!”

Are you exaggerating to make a point?

Sieg: “I just wanted to weigh in on the whole Prince George movie theatre conversation. What is with our seat layout??!”

Old design. It wouldn’t be built like that today.

“Would be nice if there was a bit of theatre competition as well… Rather than the same 6 screens to choose from every night of the week.”

If the market could bear competetion, it would be there. As it stands now, PG can only support one theatre.

JohnnyBelt: Fair enough. I’m still kinda young and sheltered living in PG my whole life, so getting out and seeing other theatres shocked me as to how logical they were.

I suppose that is true with supporting only one theatre. It’d also be nice that if there were movies coming in for 3D showing they only took up one screen. It seems like several of the 3D movies that show up occupy both a 2D and a 3D option at the same time. It’s probably due to pricing differences, but it’s annoying to have 33% of our screens dedicated to one movie.

Like JohnnyBelt, I wonder if the market for movie theatres makes it worthwhile for owners to spend money on them. I haven’t been to a movie theatre in years, and most people I know watch most if not all movies at home on DVD.

I see more misinformation about the oil sands. The land is reclaimed after cleaning up Nature’s oil spill.
If there is a market Gateway will eventually go ahead.

nononsense:”Any comments about the kids play ground when you come into the main door of Pine Center Mall?? “

I think it is a great asset! Happy children are noisy by nature- we were when we were little! Makes me wish I was that young again! There are other less noisy areas in the mall…if it would ever bother me I would go there! That’s it.

Oh lots of good stuff to comment on today :)

Rob Ford: Hmmm, let’s see. It took him almost a week to respond to the allegations, 5 of his senior staff have left, there has yet to be a slander/libel lawsuit filed against the Star, he is sporting a great new buzz cut, there were orders issued to destroy e-mails and voice mails even though it’s against the law, there is a great picture of him hanging out with thugs, examples of carefully crafted statements concerning the allegations, etc. Something stinks and it isn’t the downtown Toronto sewer.

===================================

Nothing to do in PG: It is what you make of it. There is lots of stuff to do in PG and the surrounding area if you seek it out, but it’s obviously not the same as in a larger urban centre.

Funny story, Ottawa was recently named the most boring city in Canada. I had to laugh when I heard this because the people who voted have clearly never spent much time travelling around Canada. Ottawa is not boring in the least. The sheer volume of things to do here is incredible. Ottawa is “disadvantaged” by the fact that it’s 2 hours from Montreal and 4 from Toronto. When you are stuck in the middle of those two, everything does seem small in scale. In comparison to every other city in Canada, I simply don’t see how Ottawa doesn’t compare. Just like with PG, it’s all perspective.

===================================

Malls: There are a few large ones here, but most of the newer developments are outdoors. There is one called the Centrum here in Kanata that is basically a walking mall with the big movie theatre in the middle. It’s surrounded by Box Stores, restaurants, smaller shops and service businesses. It’s a GREAT setup and people go there in the winter as well.

===================================

Movie theatres: I have a home theatre so I tend to watch all my movies at home. There are, however, certain movies that are still better on the big screen with the big sound. IMAX movies are also an exception. I’m honestly not sure if PG has the population to support more screens that it currently has, but I could be wrong. You’d have to look at the utilization rates of the screens currently there. Part of the problem (and it’s a biggie) is that large theatres are typically part of other large scale developments and there are likely to be none of those in PG for quite a while.

JB and seamutt; I am not exaggerating or providing “misinformation”. Take long look at the picture below, there is nothing living (alive) on the left hand side of the photo. Not all of the “overburden” has been removed yet as I see they still have to remove that annoying top soil to get at that glorious goo called tar sands!

http://sites.duke.edu/biology217_01_s2011_kkh11/files/2011/04/Land-Clearing-2.jpg

Imaging how big the right hand side of that picture will become once Enbridge is approved and tar sands production ramps up 30%. You can talk all you want about restoration, but a picture says a thousand words, there is nothing alive (living) on the right hand side of that picture, every living thing on the left hand side of that picture is probably gone now as well.

“Overburden” is an oil industry term that refers to everything on top of the tar sands, that overburden needs to be removed to get at the tar sands! Wow didn’t know nature could be such a “burden”!!!

I think the Rob Ford video will come out at some point. His initial silence, then his statement regarding crack use left some open interpretation, along with his new haircut doesn’t pass the smell test.

@People1st; so one website makes your point?

I’ll counter your propaganda with some of my own! lol.

http://www.oilsands.alberta.ca/reclamation.html

New houses
Malaspina ridge
University road and other new developments

It’s on MLS
Housing will revert back to the mean, in many cities its already started.

Just filled up at Costco in the states

When I left PG last week I paid aprox $1.55/lL

I posted; “It’s a good thing we can complain about a poplar tree, because in a growing part of Alberta, there is nothing naturally living (alive) to complain about!”

Then JB responds; “Are you exaggerating to make a point?”

Look at that picture above again JB and seamutt… can you see any living (alive) thing on the right hand side of the picture? How was I exaggerating or providing misinformation? I reiterate my point; “every living thing must be removed, including the top soil, to get at the tar sands.” This is the truth, this is a fact, there is no other reality!

You can try and smooth it all over by even acknowledging that yes we kill everything to get at the tar sands, but, but, but look at how we reclaim it. Yeah, I just watched your landscaping video, and that is all it is. There is no where near the bio-diversity that once naturally occurred there. What a complete sham that people can think they can replace nature! We can’t even manage the nature we have let alone replace it???!!! Give your heads a shake boys!

Well, I know many people that have to work around that noise all day with the play ground in the mall, and they are planning to move on! They say it is just awful to work around all the screaming and such…noise that kids make I guess. When we were kids we made that kind of happy noise outside…but then of coarse we were told to respect other people a lot more than children are told today!

Regarding the comment(s) that PG can’t support two theatres. That could very well be as a second, newer and cleaner theatre would put the current one out of business. Or just maybe, make it clean up its act. It is a disgusting place to watch a movie and having a monopoly business has made the landlords very complacent. Maybe with two theatres they would step up and renovate and bring in movies that appeal to a wider audience…or go broke and who would care as it doesn’t inspire any loyalty or nostalgia.

The reclaimed land is regenerating quite well actually. If you go to Google earth you will see the site is not devastating Alberta by anymeans.

Keep your bias going.

seamutt and JB; How can an oil sands company replace a wetlands ecosystem containing rare peatland 8,000 year in the making and hydologically connected through both surface and subsurface groundwater? The answer is it can’t! But that won’t stop Petro-Canada’s Fort Hills Oil Sands project from draining that ecosystem and removing that 8,000 year old peatland.

Yet as they do, virtually everyone agrees that no one knows how to reclaim this ecosystem to anything resembling what it is now!

caterpillars is plain ol soap and water sprayed on ’em.
No bare foot walking around the yard yet…..

Two thumbs down this week. 1st to the douche that parked in the handicapped spot at Canadian tire and the 2nd to your twin in the SUV that threw a bunch of empty bottles and garbage into the bush at the end of Domano. I got video of you and will post it when I get the editing done.

Not sure if it really works or not but I hear if you hammer a few copper nails into those roots it will kill them and their mother.

No city rv dump anymore? Going to guess that there are no campers, trailers in PG anymore. Makes good sense to city council–yah—DUH!!!!
What a stupid move on city councils part.
Guess we have to drive to Quesnel, Vanderhoof, or any of our neighbours.

People here is some factual reading. Notice the area of brea forest affected

Almost everyday you see news stories about people in the lower mainland being airlifted to hospital. Those people are being airlifted to hospital on the taxpayers dime. Why is it then that here in the north we do not get the same life saving treatment as those in the south, even though northerners tax dollars are being used to save southerners lives. In the north we must attempt to scratch a helicopter rescue society out of the dirt using donations from private sources to save our friends and family?

Buzzinga, you insulted a lot of older people who are foward thinkers but I agree that the people at City Hall don’t seem to be. I use to work in the tourist business (yes we do or did have one) and we were always trying to get new things into PG but City Hall was always a road block.

Maybe the city should approach Walmart and see if they would put a sani-dump in their parking lot. The city can give them a ten dollar break on their taxes.

Hey seamutt and JB, posting oil sands propaganda is not same as giving us fact or truth based information. I am glad you agree that, increasingly, there areas of Alberta contain no life, where no living thing exists!

Here is more evidence that there are places in Alberta where no living thing exists! :(

A definite veiled plea for a PAC if I ever saw one.

And it’s running right down the Athabasca River.

People1st: “Hey seamutt and JB, posting oil sands propaganda is not same as giving us fact or truth based information.”

Then why do you keep posting it?

govsux: “New houses
Malaspina ridge
University road and other new developments
450-800K
It’s on MLS
Housing will revert back to the mean, in many cities its already started.”

$800K houses are the exception in PG, not the norm, not even close. And ultimately, a house is only worth what someone will pay (finance) for it.

Signed up for 50 MBPS internet from Telus. It took 3 days to do because the tech had to be dispatched to do his part including coming into my home to ensure all equipment and connections were up to snuff. He showed up here, did nothing more than a speedtest.net then left.

Huh?

Today after test driving the 50 meg for a month I decided it wasn’t worth it for me, so I called and cancelled it. Within 20 minutes I was knocked down to 15 meg.

Shows what a money grabbing scam it is.

Speaking of money, in Frankfurt protestors surrounded and shut down the central bank and the airport. Good old democracy at work.

Some numbers to take into the week-end for reflection.

At the end of fiscal 2012 (one year ago), total provincial liabilities reported by the provincial government were $70.358 billion, or 100% greater than when the Liberal government first came into power.

Even more distressing was the government’s deliberate non-disclosure of “Contingencies and Contractual Obligations”, which the BC Auditor General publicly reported to be $96.374 billion. This liability amount was separate from the $70 billion.

Interestingly even all four party leaders were aware of these numbers during the election, however they remained silent.

We are going to get a poor credit rating very soon.

“”The Darkest Places in Hell are reserved for those who maintain their Neutrality in Times of Moral Crisis” Dante Alighieri.

Have a nice week-end.

I’m new here but not new to PG and in regards to the local movie theater I would like to remind you all it isn’t that old circa 1998.I would like to say it is just bad design and yes, PG can support another theater. We used to have more available seats and better cinemas. The Spruceland theater was 720 seats, Parkwood was 900 seats the old Odeon was around 600, and the Plaza 400 was just around 500 seats and they all did well during the 70’s and 80’s. the unfortunate thing with the grand old large cinemas (Spruceland & Parkwood )was their sizes. They were just to large to support a movie for any length of time and make money. We actually have one less screen then we did 30 years ago if you count the major movie houses more so if you remember the RP and Kit Kat so adding some competition to this town would only bring some better movies to us as well as better experiences.

Was a interesting evening, went into macdonalds to grab a coffee tonight. There was a bit of a line up of four customers waiting to be served, I was the last in line. The lady in front of me was complaining to her young daughter of how slow the service was. As soon as the complainer was about to give her order her cell phone rang, instead of giving her order she decided to hold up myself, the server and the two people behind me and have a chat on her phone. So to her it’s not okay to waste her time..but not a problem in her wasting everyone else’s. my her daughter learnt an important lesson tonight.

“And it’s running right down the Athabasca River”

The oil was running down the river before man was even on scene.

In the 70’s and 80’s, I don’t recall 60″ LCD TVs and home theatre sound systems with on demand hi-def movies available 24/7.

Fact is, times have changed. People don’t go to the movies as much, but costs to go have skyrocketed.

I think movie theatres are a dying business, much like drive in movies and video stores (which are already pretty much dead).

The reclaimed land is regenerating quite well actually. If you go to Google earth you will see the site is not devastating Alberta by anymeans.

Keep your bias going.”

Ya, like Google earth is up to date. Fly over it and come back here and post what you see.
You can make the surface green but that doesn’t mean it’s back to normal by any means.

Then you say, “The oil was running down the river before man was even on scene”

It’s not the oil in the river that’s the problem and you know that.

JB, I know $800k is not the norm for PG but $500k is the average for new construction. I have friends in town, on city lots, with $700k homes. I was simply stating PG isn’t the screaming deal for real estate some state it to be. There will be a lot of opportunity to prosper in the future in the north, I just dont think Real Estate is one of them. My opinion, just thought I’d share it.

No wonder I don’t come to this site anymore. What a colossal suckfest.

Ummm weaksauce
U post on here frequently.

Is there some reason you do not report on the increase in assets?

I suppose it sounds better with you mindset to just show liabiliies …..

Sit down with socredible sometime and he will gladly explain it all to you …… ;-)

Gus, I love you from afar..well your posts anyhow, and you missed the point. Economically, the dominoes are falling hun.

Johnny I agree with you on the fact technology and prices have changed I guess I was merely pointing out that the older theaters did provide better site lines, cleanliness and probably variety than we have now. I too have the home theater and big screen TV’s but the thrill of watching a movie like the Exorcist on a 20×40 foot screen with 700 people was an experience not just a movie. Sometimes getting out of the house makes us better. On a side note those old theaters would have been great for the performing arts if people had some vision back then.
