Prince George, B.C.- A group of CNC’s dental studies students  is just days away from going to Peru where they will provide free dental care to children and adults near Lima, the capital of Peru.

The five students, (3 dental hygiene and 2 dental assisting) graduated this spring, will be joined by one of their instructors for the volunteer project in San Jose Obrero, about 45 minutes away from Lima. The trip starts on June 12th.

The group is volunteering through Developing World Connections, a Canadian grassroots, non-profit organization whose mission is to make a positive difference in the world.

Trip organizer, Heather Mohr, the College of New Caledonia’s dental hygiene instructor says the team will be providing educational workshops as well as restorative and preventive treatment.

Although they are packing some 800 toothbrushes for their patients to keep, not all of the materials being packed for this trip   are related to dental care. They will be bringing along balloons, face paint and crafts for the kids.

The 5 students will be accompanied by Mohr  and  dentist  Dr. Paul Comparelli.

“I was looking for an opportunity to travel abroad for a volunteer project, and when I found out we were going to Peru, I jumped on it,” said Danielle Burton a dental assisting student. “I really wanted to do it.”

Dental hygiene student Sam Eakin says this experience will let them see things they won’t see in Canada,  “It will enhance our clinical skills when we return.”

This is the second-straight international outreach trip Mohr has organized for CNC dental students. In February, 2012, she lead a contingent of six hygiene students to Tanzania.

Hey! Why don’t you volunteer for a clinic in PG? Great you are going to Peru but what about home?
