CNC Names Interim President

Friday, June 7, 2013 @ 1:32 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The College of New Caledonia has named  Bryn Kulmatycki as its interim President.    He has been the Vice President Academic at the College  and will fill the  President’s post as  of July 1st.  The position has become  available with the resignation of  John Bowman who  takes on  the role of President of North Island College in August.

CNC’s Board of Governors says  Kulmatycki will  lead the  college through a transition period.   He has been with CNC  since  May of 2011 and has 14 years experience in senior administration as a CEO and regional school superintendent in Alberta as well as five years as President of Newman College.

CNC will start  its search for a President in September with the assistance of a recruitment firm.  It is expected a decision  will be made in March with a  new President likely starting  July 1, 2014.

been almost 24 hours and nobody has commented on this story … amazing what an organization can get away with on a Friday afternoon … or maybe CNC doesn’t register in the minds of many on the future of Prince George

Several observations and questions:

What has the CNC board been doing since March 22 when it was announced that Bowman was going to North Island? Surely, there was a possibility for the new president to start this fall if a search had been launched immediately.

Why is the start of the search delayed until September? Doesn’t the administration work through the summer?

Why are they contracting out the search? Are not the staff receiving $100+K annual salaries in the Human Resources department capable of conducting a presidential search?

Why is a transition plan necessary? According to the Board chair in Bowman’s departure announcement, strategic planning was Bowman’s strength. Doesn’t strategic planning include succession planning?

From March 22, OP250 story

Board chair Bob Murray says “Obviously we are sad to see him go and he will be missed, but it is good for John’s career and future. John has done excellent work on strategic planning, First Nations initiatives and striking a balance between all of CNC’s campuses.”

I hope this is not a setup to have Kulmatyki inherit the President’s position the same way Bowman did … Kutmatyki’s claim to fame a Newman College (a private Catholic seminary college in Alberta) was to cut the undergraduate programs. A common procedure is to have a written agreement to disqualify any long term interim candidate from applying for the permanent position.

I have no inside line on the Board’s thinking, but it was a bit late in the year to launch a search. The successful candidate might not be able to leave his or her previous position on such short notice, and it would not be possible to interview candidates at professional meetings that take place during the winter.

Where is the need for a transition plan mentioned?

With the new rules, comment opportunity may close by 1:32pm today … 24 hours.

I think billposer has it right. With the timeframe tht is at play in the College system, Bowman handled his timing well for himself and North Island. However, that leaves someone in a poor position, in this case CNC.

To put the cutting of the Bachelor programme in perspective, read the following. Remember, he had a Board to report to there as well.

The program was not accredited by the province and it was considered to be a graduate school according to the report.

The axman cometh . . .

Would Penny Fahlman have been able to handle this position in the interim? Jim Blake did for an interim period.

I vote for an applied science individual to move into the president position. THAT is where the college needs to go, in my opinion. It would be the best for both post secondary institutions.

So where is this strategic plan? What are its key directions? If the old system of provincial funding still applies, there is more money in applied diplomas ….. and seeking out the third year post diploma programs. At one time CNC was approved for two of those and they only acted on one.

On top of that, it needs to do that independently, not on the coattails of BCIT. A new applied diploma and post diploma based college of the Interior. I recall someone who had that vision 30 years ago …. but put more of his efforts in giving UNBC the proper kick start. ;-)

Cathe Wishart ….. maybe she will be the next president …… ;-)

When wishing for alternative candidates for interim President, consider that some people think that the interim person ought not to be a candidate for the permanent position. Thus, the appointment of Kulmatyki may reflect an interest on the part of the Board in internal candidates such as Cathe Wishart or Penny Fahlman.

Hey Gus why not wait until after midnight to post your comments so no one can reply to the baffle Gab?
