Lheidli T’enneh No Supporters of Idle No More Plan

Prince George, B.C.- The Lheidli T’enneh have issued a strong message , calling on Idle No More supporters to abstain from any plans to occupy Lheildi T’enneh sacred burial grounds adjacent to Fort George Park in Prince George.
The notice from the Lheidli T’enneh follows a recent notice from Idle No More supporters which called on supporters to set up tents and smoke-houses at the Lheidli T’enneh cemetery “to reclaim traditional territories” on July 1st.
The Lheidli T’enneh have responded to that notice with one of their own, which says “The Lheidli T’enneh Nation Chief and Council outright disapprove this action! There will not be any protests or protestors on our sacred burial lands at Lheidli T’enneh Indian Reserve #1, adjacent to Fort George Park, Prince George, B.C.”
The notice from the Lheidli T’enneh, also makes it clear the RCMP have been advised, “and will use any force necessary to remove any protestors at our burial lands. Please respect our wishes and our traditional territory.”

This is ridiculous! No one in their right mind would ever occupy sacred burial grounds for any event and I know, first hand, that this is not and never was the intent of Idle No More organizers. Someone needs to be educated. I will be there supporting this event, with bells on!!!
Yah know………Canada day is for all Canadians, I think some people ought to take pride in that fact, instead of supporting events that tear down the meaning of being a free canadian..just say’n
Prince George Girl,
Freedom isn’t free, it takes work and vigilance to maintain it. This means participating in civil disobedience when you feel your representatives are infringing on your rights. Native peoples have some legitimate Grievances, or at the very least their ancestors do. It’s their right to express their dissatisfaction openly; that’s what being free is all about.
I’m glad you’re all happy and warm in your insular little world, but things aren’t that cut and dried.
Who in their right mind would protest at a cemetary??? Very disrespectful!!!
Maybe those planning the Idle no more protest shoud have spoke with the Lheidli T’ enneh before planning to “occupy” their land?
carolb4, what part of the following is not and never was the intent of the idle no more organizers?

Where will you be when supporting this event? Where you just said it isn’t?
Dragonmaster – the event will be at Fort George Park on Canada Day. Not on the sacred burial grounds of the Lheidli T’enneh. The organizers did try to speak to the Lheidli T’enneh. And yes, I will be there offering my support.
And, by the way, I know the organizer personally. I like your comment, Sine Nomine. It is good to see that some people understand what the true issues are. :)
Seems that Lheidli T’enneh are a bit more savvy than others. They either are concerned or were given some information that the planned activities in the park could easily spill over onto their IR 1 territory which is the burial grounds.
So now everyone knows the rules ahead of time.
There is some history of trespass. In recent history (last 20 years) the City had marked off the wrong boundaries and people were walking on part of IR 1.
Should I bother looking for Chief Spence while I’m there?
Kind of an odd news release. I forgot about idle no more until now. Is the pot ready to boil over?
your right freedom isnt free! i pay for it off my checks every month. From wich that money is used for social programs to benefit the less fortunate. So just let me enjoy a day at the park without people complaining its not enough. Go idle in front of city hall!
some people need to read the charter
section 2.(c)freedom of peaceful assembly; and (d)freedom of association
we are Canadian and we have the RIGHT to protest the governments stupid policy changes, they do effect all of us!
Don’t look for Chief Spence, she is off in her Escalade to her vacation property for the weekend! And yes, you paid for it.

I am not quite sure why they would set up next to the cemetary. That piece of land is First Nations land so it does not require reclaiming.
If the topic is reclaiming land, then it can be anywhere else in the park or much of Prince George, for that matter. Perhaps they would be better off setting up at one or more of the key entries to the park, next to the museum, for instance, or the bandshell even.
