Hot Weekend for P.G. Knights

Monday, June 17, 2013 @ 3:46 AM

The Prince George Knights felt right at home in their new home.

The city’s all-star peewee baseball team, sponsored by LTN Contracting, took all four games of a weekend exhibition series with the visiting Vernon Canadians at Spruce City Stadium — which will be the site of the 2013 BC Minor Baseball Association’s peewee AAA provincial tournament, Aug. 8-11.

After Saturday’s wins by 12-2 and 10-5 scores, the Knights prevailed 12-2 and 15-7 on Sunday.

"We played well and really soaked up the atmosphere," said Knights head coach Jim Swanson. "We got contributions from everyone, and our pitchers were efficient. We didn’t make a lot of mistakes and that was key."

Quinten Astorino and Tommy Kreitz were the winning pitchers on Saturday. Ryan Hampe threw a complete game on Sunday morning, with Zach Swanson closing it out by winning the finale. Colton Schaper-Kotter hit a long home run for Vernon in that game.

For Prince George, catcher Seth Lapre paced the offence by going 8-13 with two homers, both in the first game, two doubles and 10 RBIs. Soren Erricson had seven runs driven in, thanks in part to two timely doubles. The Knights scored runs in 11 of the 21 innings they came to the plate. The Knights outhit the Canadians 40-24.

"We did make six errors over the four games, some uncharacteristic things that seem to have become more regular, and we’d like to tighten that up, but it helped that we got some great pitching performances from Quinten Astorino, Ryan Hampe, Liam Campbell, Tommy Kreitz and Zach Swanson in particular," said the coach. "Vernon is a very good team, lots of size and skill, and they will likely be there at the end at the AA-level provincials, and they are the best team in the Okanagan. To have a team of that quality come up and test us, we really appreciate it."

The Knights will be in a AAA-level tournament in Kamloops starting June 28, in a pool with Sherwood Park, Chilliwack and Kamloops. After that, the Knights are in Kelowna for the Valley of Champions event, July 11-14.

Other members of the team are Matt Siemens, Mikey Schwab, Liam Campbell, Brett Mero, Brevin Gervais and Ajay Nickolet. Coaches are Jim Swanson, Denny Astorino, Brad Kreitz, Keith Hampe and Ray Siemens.
