Internal Hydro Probe Includes Some Prince George Employees

Prince George, B.C. – Eighteen B.C. Hydro employees, including some in Prince George, are on paid leave while the company conducts an internal investigation into the possible theft of power and/or B.C. Hydro equipment.
 
However, B.C. Hydro is refusing to release much information about the probe or those allegedly involved. 250 News contacted B.C. Hydro’s Manager of Media Relations, Simi Heer, to try to learn how many Prince George employees are affected. Heer responded “That’s actually not information that B.C. Hydro has provided, so we’ve just issued a statement but it doesn’t get into that level detail.”
 
The statement is as follows: “We are conducting a thorough, internal investigation into the conduct of a small number of employees who appear to have been involved with the theft of B.C. Hydro equipment or other activities that would constitute a violation of our Code of Conduct. This is an internal personnel matter at the moment and we cannot provide further information at this time. B.C. Hydro and its employees take the safety, reliability and security of our system very seriously. That is why we are conducting such a thorough investigation. We need to ensure the conduct of a small number of individuals is not affecting the safety and security of the public or our employees.”
 
The business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Doug McKay, says the 18 workers, most of them line workers, are accused of stealing equipment of installing hydro by-passes to supply power to illegal marijuana grow-ops. He disputes that claim. The workers on leave during the investigation are in Prince George, Westbank, Surrey, Coquitlam and Campbell River.

“He disputes that claim” and how on earth could he possibly know how each and every union member conducts themselves. A meaningless statement that is simply the union creedo “we do no wrong, ever”.

Crime capital of Canada, why wouldn’t someone from Prince George be involved? With full spectrum grow LEDS being available, soon most grow ops will be powered by a 2000 watt Honda generator. HA have a lot of money so I imagine these folks were paid a pretty penny for their services. Firemen, Hydro workers……next!

But how do you know what information he may or cannot have?

So, Dragonmaster, if you were a representative for an organization of a few thousand people, and you were told that a small handfull were accused of something, on what basis would you dispute that claim?

Those members told you they did not do it?

My belief is this all starts from the top down.People see politicians,senators,ceo’s commiting crimes and getting away with it without doing any jail time.They think to themselves,hey if they can do it I can to on a much smaller scale.Only they get caught,fired and may have to actually do time in the slammer, because the powers that be,will actually bring criminal charges against them.When society can actually bring the rich and powerful to justice for the real crimes they commit on the rest of us,then we might bring some real change to this world we exist in.

I don’t know, I would have much rather seen a statement such as:

“We are working with BC Hydro to address and resolve these allegations and to ensure that our members are treated fairly while that process is underway”

Why is it that all union heads seem to believe that bravado and/or ridiculously simplistic positions are the best way to lead their members? Surely the rank and file aren’t that dumb as to believe that this type of stuff could not happen.

I think it is because they are voted into office; thus typically selected on who is next in line (aka seniority) and who tells the best stories rather than on management knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Even if they are or were to be hired into the position from outside, the selection criteria and committe would be so structured that it would have the same outcome.

It is the culture, no more or less than there is a culture for municipal administration, municipal council and so on up into provincial and federal governments.

And if you do not quite possess that culture, you are a junior until you take on that culture because that is the only way you can rise.

It is survival of the species …. ;-)
