Fire Fuel Treatment Areas in P.G. Dwindling

Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George has received 75% of the funding needed for a prescription treatment of a potential wildfire area in the west end of the City.
There is a small patch of woodland on Sykes Road West, that is across from several residences. The City wants to prune and thin through that wooded area to remove fuels from the forest floor. The full project has a cost of $4 thousand, but the City applied for, and has been granted maximum allowable for a project (75%) through the UBCM Wildfire Prevention Initiative.
There are only a couple of areas in the City which still need some wildfire fuel reduction treatment says Dan Adamson, Manager of the City’s Community Forest. There is an area at Ferguson Lake, and one near Pidherny, on the north side of North Nechako Road which also need treatment.
The City’s Community Forest Licence is due to expire in 2016. Adamson says Council will have to decide if it should let the licence expire. But forests are dynamic says Adamson, who says normal growth and deadfall could see the fire fuel issues return in a few years. He says there will need to be further discussions with the Province on future options.

This fall when I rake my leaves I can tell and impress my friends by saying “I did some fire fuel treatment on my estate”. That ought to wow them. I love the English language.
