World Baseball Challenge Given Green Light

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 @ 10:54 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The World Baseball Challenge will go ahead.
After a long meeting last night, the WBC Society has  expressed thanks to those who stepped up to the plate over the past week, to ensure the cash strapped event could proceed.

“Following a late push for corporate support, we are excited to be hosting this major sporting event for the third time. We are so thankful for those who showed their support for what this event does for the community and its profile,” said Co-Chair and Marketing Director Shawn Rice.

The WBC was in jeopardy of being cancelled as the   organizing committee was about $50 thousand dollars short of the needed budget.   That shortfall was the result of reduced attendance in 2011   because of inclement weather.   To add to the problem, many corporate sponsors had made commitments to other projects, making it difficult to find funding.

“We have a volunteer committee of 34 people and they all work very hard on this tournament. But all the vision and planning doesn’t become a reality without the corporate sector, their words of encouragement and their tangible participation. We continue to appreciate those who step up to make this community a better place to live ”   adds Rice.

The next push will be for volunteers to help run the event. Anyone interested in helping out can email worldbaseball@telus.net.

Scheduled for August 13-22nd at Citizen Field, the opening night will see Canada play team USA at 7 pm.

Because you asked, here is the note of thanks from the World Baseball Championship Society:

“The organizing committee would like to shine a bold light on all the corporate partners, in particular sponsors who came on board in a significant way to spur this event over the past week – Rio Tinto Alcan, Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline, Wood Wheaton, Treasure Cove Casino, Westcana Electric, Kelly O’Bryan’s, Regional Security, Finning, 250News, Powerpro Industries, Norweld, and AAA Photography.
So many corporate partners help make this community what it is, including the Prince George Citizen, Falcon Drilling, Chinook Scaffold Systems, the Nechako Rotary Club, Northern Hardware and Furniture, Hart Home Hardware, Home Hardware-Central Builders, Michael’s Jewelers, CKPG/The Drive/The River, Pomeroy Lodging, Can-Crane, Treasure Cove Hotel, CN Rail, Coca-Cola, Northern Sport Centre, Raymond James, Re/Max Centre City Realty, Schulli Carpentry/Winmar, Scoutin and Associates, Clarke Freightways, Lodgepole, Queensway Auto World, WJ Stor and Go, Westwood Pub, Pine Centre Mall, PG Yamaha, Sound Factory, TELUS, IDL, Dunkley Lumber, PG Airport Authority, Up the Creek Garment Co., Woodland Equipment, Canadian Tire, Trident Mobile Locksmiths, Pacific Western Helicopters, CAT Rental, LA Promotions, PG Portable Toilet, Blockbuster Pumping, Ron’s Towing, Carson-Wagonlit Travel, and Superstore.
We are also extremely grateful to the outstanding contributions of the Toronto Blue Jays, Rawlings, Hosting BC, Tourism PG, BC Lottery Corporation, the City of Prince George, the Coast Inn of the North, Northern Spirit Transportation and Pacific Western Brewing.

This event would not happen without the incredible support of Shirley Bond, Pat Bell, John Rustad and Mike Morris, Mayor Shari Green and Prince George City Council, and Colin Kinsley of Enbridge, and MPs Dick Harris and Bob Zimmer, all people who recognize the significance of this event to building positive profile for the city and region. Baseball Canada’s backing is key in so many ways, and Larry Seminoff continues to be a strong guiding force for the event he founded in Grand Forks in 2002.”

So there you have it.
