Fireworks Return to Canada Day Celebrations

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 @ 4:04 AM
Prince George, B.C. –Connaught Hill Park will be off limits on July 1st as crews will be setting up the fireworks display.

It will be the first Canada Day fireworks display in Prince George since 2007 says Marlies Greulich, the Executive Director of the Prince George Multicultural Heritage Society.

It is the Society which puts together the Canada Day celebrations, and finding a sponsor for a fireworks display is not easy “Some say it is a waste of money, I mean, who wants to sponsor a fireworks display when all your money goes up in smoke in 10 minutes?”

This year, the display has been sponsored by Canfor. Greulich says it was Mayor Green who worked hard to have Canfor come on board and put up $10 grand for the fireworks, which are also part of the company’s 75th anniversary celebrations. But this year’s show is a one time commitment, there is nothing to indicate there will be a display next year.

The Canada Day festivities at Fort George park are meant to be all inclusive says Greulich “We try to make it a festival, some place where people can come with a picnic basket and enjoy the day”. Putting together the day’s events can be a challenge says Greulich, who says her annual budget for the birthday party is between $45 and $50 thousand dollars. Only $4,200 comes from Heritage Canada, it is an amount she says has remained unchanged for 20 years.

Greulich says with the fireworks being launched from Connaught Hill, the display should be visible from nearly any where in Prince George “So we try to make a birthday party everyone can enjoy, and fireworks are a nice finish.”

What amazes me is the money our council spends on land etc but keeps cutting back on things people enjoy.. they waived back and forth about the kids train.. finally finding that 10k to keep it running.. no fireworks on CANADA DAY for 5 years.. but they have received raises in the same time period, and spent millions on unused land.

Thanks to Canfor for stepping up and donating.

Great news. Little things like this make the community worth living in.

Canfor was planning the fireworks display already. All they did was change the date of their 75th birthday to July 1st. I wonder if this means that the PGX won’t have any this year?

it’s “B C N X” not PGX.just say’n…

Somebody should recognize that Cam that owns the 1st Litre Pub showed us how to put 10 grand up in smoke for many years on Canada Day! It’s about time the biggest employer in Prince George stepped up to the plate.

Thanks Cam for all the years you gave us a fireworks show!

And I forget, we smell Canfors smoke and stink day in and day out. About time they put some colour to it….

As much as I agree Tax that its about time Canfor stepped up with all the money they have I have to disagree a tad about them making us breath their smoke and stink. We’re a mill town and that’s what we get for living in one, it’s what we’re knows for, and its not just us, go to any town with a mill and it doesn’t smell like fresh flowers lol, it’s the smell of money and employment. Great news about the fireworks and yes thanks to canfor and cam for the fireworks shows for the community, and thanks to all that help put these events together for the rest of us :)

Thanks Canfor! I know I will be enjoying the fireworks! And glad to see they’re not at CN Center.

Lol scruffy if you want to correct me correct me properly. You can call it what you like but when something has been called the same name for a hundred years changing it will make no difference. It will always be the PGX!

I would have thought that with all of the “rah rah Canada” commercials Target has out they would have been all over this, being new to town and all ;)

Thanks Canfor!

if you want the number one industry in this town to fund it maybe we should go door to door and take donations from all the growers. Theres only going to be one smell in the park when the fireworks go up!

i dont understand why the fine folks that arrange the fireworks dont set up some sort of public donation plan for the canada day fireworks i know several people who would be willing to chip in including myself
