IRP Numbers Staggering

Friday, June 28, 2013 @ 9:25 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Stats from the first 30 months of the Immediate roadside prohibition law in B.C.
show drinking and driving deaths in B.C. have dropped by 51%.
The figures,  released by the Ministry of Justice this morning, are the lowest ever recorded. In that time,  the Ministry says

fatalities due to drinking and driving have dropped to an average of 56 per year.

That compares to a five-year average of 114 before the IRP program came into effect in September 2010.

The Ministry says some drivers aren’t listening to the message, as from January to the end of April this year, 5,638 IRPs were served.

That number includes 3,860 drivers blew in the “fail” range, indicating their blood alcohol was .08 or more.

A further 1,778 drivers blew in the “warn” range of .05 to .08.

RCMP have advised they will be out in force this weekend, and they will be looking for impaired drivers.

Would be interesting to know if all deaths caused by motor vehicles have a reduction also.

Seems to me that the number of deaths due to distracted driving has increased substantially.

The huge decrease in alcohol seems very high. I sometimes wonder if they have changed to way they get these statistics.

Ie Alcohol related deaths (alcohol in the vehicle, or being used by someone other than the driver) as opposed being driver specific.
