Prince George, B.C.- It is a Canada Day Shirley Gratton will never forget.

The former City Councillor, has been awarded the City’s highest honour. At a ceremony at Fort George Park this afternoon, Mayor Shari Green has announced that Shirley Gratton is now a Freeman of the City.

The award came as a complete surprise to Gratton, who thought she was on-hand to recognize a special ‘community booster’.  She says she completely honoured to be presented with the ‘key’ to the City.

This is only the 13th time in the history of Prince George that a person has been given the honour.

Past recipients are: Anne Martin, former Mayors Colin Kinsley, John Backhouse, Garvin Dezell, Carrie Jane Gray, Harold Moffat , and the Rocky Mountain Rangers Royal Canadian Army Cadets Corp, Canadian Forces Station Baldy Hughes, Pastor Lance Morgan, Ted Williams, Chief Justice Wilson, and Peter Wilson, City Solicitor.

In addition to her past role as City Councillor, Shirley Gratton has been a volunteer extraordinaire. If there is any event that needs a hand, Shirley steps up to the plate. Just some of her past work includes: being a key player on the Communities in Bloom committee, working tirelessly to support the City’s bid for the 2015 Canada Winter Games, and she is an annual contributor to the Festival of Trees
