Prince George, B.C. – The dates have been set for a Coroner’s Inquest into the  police shooting death of Gregory Matters.

The 40 year old died  at a property  on the east  end of Prince George last September following a standoff with police.

The inquest will take place from Oct. 7-11, 2013, at the Prince George courthouse.

Presiding coroner Chico Newell and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death.

While the jury may not, by law, make any findings of legal responsibility, it will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.

Actually according to the IIO report the police knew about his mental issues early on and in fact talked to his psychiatrist so I would say they had an idea what they were dealing with… in fact it could be argued the other way, maybe things turned out worse because they knew they were dealing with someone who wasnt mentally fit who was threatening to shoot them.

Incompetent operation by an incompetent organization and should be held accountable.

I’m glad to see that an inquest will be held. It is the least they could do.
From what we have been allowed to learn about this case it the news media, it sounds like an unjust killing. Although I wans’nt there to see what really went down, I maintain that the police are too quick to pull the trigger when they feel threatened.
metalman.

“the police are too quick to pull the trigger when they feel threatened”? Metalman what would you do if a large mentally ill man was swinging a hatchet at you?
