Prince George, B.C. – There was an interesting convergence of summertime events in Prince George this weekend.

Hundreds of youngsters and their parents were gathered at the Civic Centre Plaza for the fun provided by the BMO KidzArt Dayz when suddenly a parade broke out. It was the Pride Parade making its way through the plaza before coming to an end at City Hall. The kids looked on with interest as the decorated vehicles and people in the parade passed by with the famous song by the Village People, “YMCA” blaring in the background.

One could almost imagine a conversation (photos below) going something like, “Look at my rainbow……you look at my art.”

It is unclear whether organizers of either activity knew of the other’s event, but they were briefly brought together for a short time in downtown Prince George.

umm. looks like a few showed up.

I just don’t understand somethings…So, these guys/gals are gay…My question is, why do they need to parade around and advertise they are gay??? Really , who cares, i know i don’t .

Pride: a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated . . .

Parade: a public procession, esp. one celebrating a special day or event . . .

Anything else we can do for you?

Ask them. Best way to find out is to go to the source.

Why do people at Caribana need to parade around “jumping” each other? Why do women at Mardi Gras in New Orleans bare their breasts of trinkets? Why do people have to have a naked bicycle ride event? Why is there an Elks parade with people dressed up in stupid looking costumes?

Ever feel like a little kid?

Why mommy why?

Because, my child, because. ;-)

Gus if you can’t see the difference what can I say.

People celebrate all kinds of events. What makes this one so different from any other? If it wasn’t a pride parade no one would comment negatively on this. In today’s world children should see the different lifestyles and cultures and understand them and be taught tolerance. In today’s world this makes a well rounded child.
Eagleone … Your comments are hurtful to those involved. I hope your ok with that…

Unfortunately we were away because our children would have been in attendance at both! Everyday is a parade for straight people who have never suffered oppression and condemnation. If I was finally starting to be recognized as having the same value as heterosexuals then I think I would want a parade too.

I also have a feeling that with the current social situations plaguing our downtown that that parents of children at the BMO event likely had MUCH trickier explaining to do about a loving rainbow parade.

*than* about a loving…..

The truth shouldn’t be hurtful and I don’t think my comments are of the type that should have been removed.

Children and people that celebrate sexual innuendo have no place mixing. It is about brain washing the next generation pure and simple. I would have none of that with my children.

I agree the gay community has more influence and respect these days than people that just want to protect children from the gay viewpoint.

To me promoting self dignity in the child is more important than someone that wants to publicize their sexual orientation.

Well Eagleone.. your entitled to your opinion even if it is extremely skewed in today’s world. With that logic why celebrate anything. The gay population have been as oppressed as the natives for decades, do you question their parades? If a straight couple were in a parade flaunting their sexuality you would you be as hard on them? And before you wonder anymore, I am a straight male married to a woman for the last 22 years. You can work out the age group for your self.

Seamutt … don’t take your intolerance3 out on me. It is you that is making the problem out of something that really should be no problem.

So, you okay with New Orleans Carnival fun?

How about the Toronto Caribana event?

How about the naked bike ride?

If you are a prude, that is one thing. If, however, you single out the gays, well that is another thing.

You have not said squat. You just drag me into a fight that I am not fighting. I cannot change you mind on a single thing. So why try? Waste of energy.

So if the arts fest were held in May, would it have been okay for the May Day parade, or Elks, or whatever spring/summer parades we may have to have moved through the civic centre?

Unless the policy of the City is that no more than one event can be in any given place at the same time, it would be discrimination to prevent the second party from co-locating in such a fashion.

The report starts off with:

“There was an interesting convergence of summertime events in Prince George this weekend.”

Has anyone else wondered what the reporter thought was so interesting?

THANK YOU GUS!

Why was this article even written. That is the question. It is despicable that it was written. It is even more despicable that it is appearing on this website. In my opinion Opinion 250 lost whatever credibility it ever had when it published this piece of garbage.

Does the Easter Bunny wear pants ?

Gus you still don’t get it do you. Now you have lowered yourself to name calling. So sad.

Pretty sure there were lots of straight folk at and in the parade too. I was there and I’m not gay. Pride to me is a true celebration of love. It’s an inclusive event. That’s what’s so special about it. Celebrate each other for who we are, celebrate the love between people regardless of orientation. If you are against that, well…you crazy. Also you missed out on some candy.

Voccer this wasn’t a native parade. Nor was it the Elks Day parade or the Easter bunny parade. Lets not mix apples with oranges to justify things.

If they want to have the right to do things in their own bedrooms or get rights as partners I wouldn’t argue with it.

The argument is it is not appropriate to be flaunting sexuality of a questionable morality before children in the same public square as the children are having their own festival. Its bad enough we have to see it in our streets. Whats next a children’s dance festival at the nude bar?

News flash not every parent wants their kids exposed to this kind of activity that some still view as immorality. Its just not appropriate and I stand by that sentiment.

Also to say we missed out on some candy misses the point entirely.

And yes I would be just as hard on straight people that wanted to flaunt their sexuality in public squares and on our streets in front of children or other public. The public space is not the place.

Eagleone, I would not want to expose my children to flagrant sexuality gay or straight either as that’s not appropriate however your original comment indicates you are clearly homophobic and you calling gay people deviants is extremely offensive. Also I stand by the fact that a well rounded child is aware of whats common in our world today and not to judge people. There are lawyers, firemen, police officers and soldiers who are gay. Are they deviants also.

A person can be described as being intolerant based on characteristics displayed. Making an observation that one thinks someone is intolerant is not name calling.

The same goes with prude. It is a characteristic which one may feel a person displays.

Calling someone an ass, on the other hand, is name calling. I have not called anyone an ass …. yet … ;-)

So, I am told I do not get it by seamutt.

Here is what I get.

In some societies, especially the North American White Anglo Saxon Protestant dominated society, people of different sexual orientation had to keep that hidden even to the extent of keeping it hidden from parents and other close relatives, never mind the public.

To me, the gay parades are a celebration of being able to be open about one’s sexual orientation and not fearing being burned at the stake, or put in jail and even executed in some countries in Africa and Asia or simply being ostracized by family and society.

To me they are saying, “here I am, I am finally open about a part of my life that I never could be open about. I am free.”

I cannot imagine what that must feel like to some!!

Does the easter bunny wear pants ….. yes, for seamutt and eagleone, he/she/it wears pants and a top.

Thats ok Gus, your secret is good here. We won’t tell anyone… lol.

Voccer. A deviant is not the word I used. You are reading between the lines and making your own assumptions. What I think of the indoctrination of children to a culture that is rife with sexual innuendo so as to recruit for future ‘use’ is no longer politically correct. Its a shame that one can not use exact language on this issue IMO.

One would think those in the gay community with family values would want to distance themselves from some of the more outlandish behaviors of those representing their community.

I don’t suspect you will be heading up a heterosexual parade anytime soon Gus!! You may get some rotten tomatoes thrown at you.

But imagine what some of these countries would do to a pedophile and Thief’s. It’s not all bad in foreign countries.

the comments on this article, and the article itself, are the reason there needs to be a parade like this. wake up, people. be kind.
