RCMP Musical Ride Rolls In

Saturday, July 13, 2013 @ 4:27 AM

The RCMP’s Musical Ride rolled into the exhibition grounds early last night

Prince George, BC – Rain or shine, Prince George residents will have the opportunity to see the RCMP’s historical Musical Ride in action this evening…

A caravan of three horse transport trailers and a bus carrying the riders arrived at the exhibition grounds just before 5pm last night, and the horses were quickly settled into the nearby stables after their long drive from Fort St. John.

The Ride’s BC summer tour launched in the northern city on Thursday evening.  Prince George residents are lucky enough to have two opportunities to watch the high precision performance at the outdoor ice oval, at 7pm tonight and 2pm tomorrow.

Prince George RCMP Community Policing Volunteer, Gordon Laarz, says members of the public can stop by the stables anytime between 9am and 9pm today and tomorrow, except during the performances, to chat with the officers involved and pat the horses.  Laarz says the show will open with local equestrian riders, include an RCMP Police Dog Services demonstration, and, of course, feature the Musical Ride at its finest – with intricate figures and cavalry drills all performed to music.  He says tickets have been flying out of the local Community Policing Office.

The two BC mounties that are part of the full troop of 32 are both former Prince George residents, Constables Jennifer McRae (shown at left with her horse, Dancer) and Brett Cunningham. (click here, for previous story)

McRae says she has lots of family and friends who will be attending this weekend’s performances.  She says it’s really special to be part of what is an "historical icon of Canada, and the RCMP" and she’s excited to be returning to Prince George.

Although she did not have a lot of experience with horses, McRae was recommended for the Musical Ride after a five-week basic training course.  She did the six-month intermediate training course and will wrap up her three-year term at the end of this tour season.

Last year, the Ride travelled overseas to Germany and England, where, McRae says, the reception was incredible.  "Because of the iconic nature of what we do and the ‘picture’ of who we are," says the constable, "That’s what people around the world know of the RCMP and, so, when we show up and that’s what they see, they are amazed."

Tickets for the Musical Ride can be purchased at the ice oval gates – $10 for those 12 and older, $5 for youngsters – with the money raised going to support local community policing initiatives.  Attendees are advised to bring blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the performance.

Woulda been nice if they were more clear bout the tickets and where they can be purchased. Went to Cpac and was told single tickets only sold at the gate and that they only sell family tickets at these offices. Guess they didn’t do anything bout my complaint for all the websites advertizing this event still make it sound like all tickets are sold at the prospective offices.

Still a good event to see and support

With all the sexual harassment issues in the news lately makes you wonder is someone in the ride isn’t bring harassed right now.

No thanks!

Ah yes, the mounties- respected and treated well by the world over…but not by our own government (cut backs, broken governmental promises about their wages and bill c-43)

And now the poor souls have to move into the new PAC and make do with quarters that have more building volume for Timmy kiosks in the lobby than for their operational space.

I mean, they could have gotten their raises if the City had only built them a practical building like the local Hydro workers are getting.

The two fanciest buildings in northern B.C. are a court house and a police station.

lmorge: “Ah yes, the mounties- respected and treated well by the world over…but not by our own government”

… or many citizens for that matter.

Amen JohnnyBelt, amen.
