Dozens Apply to RCMP Auxiliary Program

The RCMP put out the call a couple of weeks ago, looking for people who want to make a commitment and a difference in the community.
“The next steps will see the Auxiliary program getting in touch with the applicants and arranging interviews” says Corporal Craig Douglass, Media Liaison Officer with the detachment. He expects the interview process will be completed in August and the training will start in the fall.
Auxiliary Constables are Peace Officers, and assist the RCMP members in a variety of duties including foot patrols, speed watch, school visits and ride along with members . They are the added police presence acting on direction from the full fledged members.
Right now there are 13 Auxiliary Constables, with the hope those numbers can be increased to about 30. With training this fall, and a little over a year’s experience under their belt, the PG Detachment is optimistic the new crew will be ready to assist during the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
The successful applicants will undergo 120 hours of training and must be committed to providing 160 hours of volunteer service every year.

My father in law was a auxiliary officer for years in several cities in BC. He resigned from the force when the RCMP changed the rules & no longer allowed them to carry a side arm. Allthough properly trained, he never once had to us it let alone remove it from its holster. He felt that the auxiliarys were handicapped by the loss of the weapon. He found that I certain situations he found the more rowdy members of the public were less cooperative & were eager to try & fight an officer once they noticed the vacant space on the hip where his sidearm should be. Good luck to all that applied.
Grimfaus is correct. Wearing the uniform without the ability to defend yourself is like painting a target on your back (or front, or side, or…)
Give them a Bobby baton or a taser!
