Prince George, B.C. – The plan to rebuild the Lakeland mills plant on River Road officially kicks into high gear Monday with the start of construction.

The sawmill was destroyed the night of April 23rd, 2012 by an explosion and fire. Two employees, Alan Little and Glenn Roche were killed and 24 others were injured. The 150 people who worked at the operation at the time were left without work. There has been no determination whether charges will be laid in connection with the explosion.

Meantime, the Sinclair Group announced in March that the sawmill would be rebuilt and would employ 100 workers once completed and operational. Preparatory work has already been taking place with a foundation laid for a new office building.

Wood waste (pictured above) that resulted from the destruction of the old plant has been broken down and funneled into the District Energy System.

Great news that Lakeland will be back in business!

I agree.

It is just too bad that past mayors and the province did not have the foresight to have a new heavy industrial site ready out of the downtown of the city so that we can eventually get access to the river for more appropriate 21st century urban development.

The location was great for pre 1960 urban North America. It no longer is.
