BC Conservatives To Select New Leader In April

Tuesday, July 23, 2013 @ 9:12 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The B.C. Conservatives have set the dates for their convention to select a new leader.
John Cummins tendered his resignation last week and the Party has announced a new leader will be selected on the weekend of April 11th, 2014.

An interim leader for the Party will be announced by the end of this month

Party President Dan Denis says the April date will allow 8 months for the campaign, giving potential candidates adequate time to present themselves to the Party members before  what will be a  Province-wide mail-in vote.

"Our Constitution entitles every single Party member to have a vote on the vital question of leadership through a mail-in, preferential ballot system," Denis says "although people who come to the convention will have the option of bringing their ballots with them and voting at the event itself.  We are also investigating the possibility of live-streaming the convention to different regions of the Province, to allow as many people as possible to participate in the voting close to their homes, rather than having to travel to the actual convention in the Lower Mainland."

Several people have already notified Denis of their intentions to run, but he will leave it up to those candidates to make their own announcements.

They have some hope in that they recognize the value of the preferential ballot in using this method to elect their leader. This should ensure leadership candidates work for all stakeholders as none will likely get the 50% majority on the first ballot. It should help bring the party to the center in a worthwhile debate for the people of BC. This could be the catalyst that brings the BC conservative mainstream in BC.
