Road Rehab Plans Revised

Friday, July 26, 2013 @ 4:00 AM
Prince George, B.C. – There is some good news and some bad news on the road rehabilitation front.

Mick Jones, Supervisor Streets Division, says the work that had been planned for Chief Lake road between Foothills Boulevard and Highway 97, has been put on hold until next year. “We had been waiting for a developer to install a water main, and we didn’t want to redo that stretch of road until that watermain work was completed” says Jones.   “We also held off on doing any pothole repairs on that stretch because we were expecting to repave the whole section.” So that $480 thousand dollar repaving job was moved to next year and crews will be doing patching and pot hole repairs to get that piece of roadway through until the paving season of 2014.

That means, there was $480 thousand dollars in the road rehab budget that could be reallocated, so, the good news is there are four smaller projects that were not on the original job order for this year, that are being done. Those projects are:

1. McGill Crescent , between Domano Boulevard and Eton Crescent, 0.820 lane kilometres, cost of $127,000.
2. Ferry Avenue , between Highway 16 and Rec Place Road, 0.825 lane kilometres, cost of $109,000
3. Nicholson Street  between 15th Ave and 18th Ave, 0.852 lane kilometres Cost  $64,000
4. Giscome Road,  this project has been  completed

Some watermain work is also delaying a section of the work planned for West Austin Road. A developer has not yet advised the size of the water main connection needed, but once that has been settled, that section of West Austin, along with the section from Kelly road South to Foothills, will be re-done.

Jones says the road rehab program will be about 80% complete when the current string of projects, ( those mentioned above and  three others) are completed    around the end of next week.

He says the last bit of work is slated for after the long weekend in August   and that will wrap up what has been the most extensive road rehab season the City has undertaken in years.

And yes, crews continue to patch those potholes and seal those cracks. For those who are keeping count, Jones says that so far this year, they have filled 10,341 potholes.

It certainly does appear there is some headway being made in road repair under the present city hall administration.

They spent some additional money last year, and are spending the budget on a yearly basis, so they should be making some headway.

There is a long way to go.

The progress in my opinion is the result of the major complaints from the citizens of Prince George. Not sure how much we would have got done if we had sat on our hands.

Squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Is Tyner Blvd between Hwy 16 and Ospika on the list?
