Prince George, BC – Chances are you’ve come over the rise in a hill to see a gauge broadcasting your vehicle’s speed from the boulevard at least once over the past two months.

Several volunteers with the local Citizens on Patrol have been conducting speed watch operations over the course of June and July.

COP Coordinator, Mike Burt, says during eight operations in June, 4,798 vehicles were monitored, with volunteers noting 243 travelling 20-kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit.

Burt says another 500 vehicles have been monitored so far this month in what’s meant to be an ‘educational enforcement’ with the goal of getting drivers in the Prince George are to slow down.

awesome. I love it

I have one of those things in my car..what’s it called again. Oh yeah a speedometer..it’s much more accurate.

Whats the speed limit on Foohills?? 50??

It’s 50 in places, 70 in places, then 80. But between 8-9 am it seems to be a steady 90 :)

Write those licence plate numbers down carefully!

I received a threatening letter from the South Surrey RCMP telling me my vehicle was caught by one of these volunteer speed traps in Surrey. Which was interesting, since my vehicle was parked at work in Prince George at the time they noted. So that was a waste of time and money to send the letter to the wrong person.

I got one of those several decades ago for speeding on Vancouver Island. I had not been to Vancouver Island for years.

They got the license plate from which they would have gotten the car description and the owner info, of course. No picture attached. I do not think too many camera controls where around then. So, essentially there was no proof.

I guess it must have been someone who complained or maybe an officer saw the speeding car and lost it but thought that the number he/she had seen happened to be mine.

Very disconcerting that things have not improved. I wrote back that I was not on the island. Never heard back from them. Luckily I did not have to go to traffic court on the island.

They should set up near solid lines and monitor the passing.

I fallowed this woman in a van with kids in it,one day.She was talking on the Phone doing 120kmh,between 1st an 5th…distracted??

The speed limit on Foothills south of the river was changed a number of years back when they did some monitoring of actual speeds when too many people complained. It had been 50 so it was a great place to have to have speed traps.

So, after that they changed it. Driving north from 15th, it is 60 from Ochakwin onwards till 1st Avenue where it turns to 70kph.

The complication to some drivers is that there is a yellow caution sign at Killoren which advises about a restricted view going over the rise. The yellow sign suggests a speed of 50. However, speeds on yellow signs are not enforced, so technically it remains at 60.
====================================

So … you reported that woman, phoned in a license plate, and someone in Cranbrook is going to get a letter from ICBC because you were unsure of the 3rd letter …. ;-)

While this is a nice gesture, it really begs the question … what is wrong with with the model of enforcement practiced in Alberta, Washington state and our other neighbours? … hire a few more officers, give them a ticket book and tell them to go out and cost recover their salaries … 243 tickets at $100+ per pop would cover a weeks salary at least. When they have slowed down the speeders, they can switch to the red lighters and stop sign runners … got to be a few years work there at least … nothing wrong with quotas as long as they are ticketing legitimate offenders.

anotherside: Exactly.

Most people know how few traffic police are out there and so figure their chances of getting caught are pretty low, which is right.
Years ago I suggested to the NDP gov’t at the time, to organise a mobile squad of police, about a dozen, some in marked and some unmarked cars. They could travel around this province and set up all sorts of checks anywhere and at any time. They could set up speed traps on highways, three or four in a row until people learned that they can’t speed up again right after seeing a car pulled over.
They could target intersections for red lights and stop signs, a whole bunch at a time.

With a bit of demonstration, people would learn that if they are going to do illegal things, they will get caught so they will improve their driving habits if they want to keep their licenses.
I think that would be invaluable in teaching the motoring public that bad driving habits would cost plenty. Think about all the accidents that could be prevented and injuries and deaths that could be avoided if people drove like they did when they took their driving tests!

“if people drove like they did when they took their driving tests”

LOL …. too many of those in the GVRD …. little women who have a hard time seeing over their steering wheels and hoods. They drive EXACTLY like they did when they did their road examination because they do not know any other way to drive.

After numerous complaints from residents the RCMP finally started putting up some speed traps on North Kelly. It was so good to see them nabbing all those yahoos who figure 90 in a 50 zone is perfectly acceptable.

You got that right axman. Luckiest sob I’ve ever seen lives down N Kelly somewhere. Silver toyota tundra passes me right at Ferguson while I was doing 50. Policeman had his backed turned with someone he already had pulled over as we go past him side by side through the intersection. Also fortunate for toyota jerkoff was the fact that I didn’t turn left onto Ferguson that day.

What about the lady driving down Abu turning on fifth Saturday……. Brushing her teath?!?!!??!?! WTF

Many drivers everywhere do not pay attention. They are the dangerous ones on the road. Doing 90 in a 70 zone isn’t quite as dangerous as this local driver with 2 small children on board.

i think there is less and less people driving fast as most people drive slower so they can text. Also more people like red lights instead of rushing through the yellow, so they can stop and check there texts again. Texts have some positives.
