Prince George, BC – RCMP now say the driver of a vehicle that struck a power pole on North Nechako Road early this morning has succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Prince George Media Relations Officer, Corporal Craig Douglass, says the 19-year-old man was fatally injured when the older model compact car he was driving struck a utility pole near McLarty Road just before 3am.  The victim was transported by ambulance to the University Hospital of Northern BC, where he passed away later this morning.

Corporal Douglass says the driver was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, but, based on evidence gathered at the scene, it appears the westbound vehicle was travelling well in excess of the posted speed limit of 60km/hr.

Both RCMP and the BC Coroners Service continue to investigation.

RCMP investigators and a collision reconstructionist were on-scene for several hours this morning, while motorists were able to get around the area via a detour.

This is really tragic. I live in the area and heard the crash. I was awake because the foxes (and there are tons of them) woke me up. I know speed appears to have been a factor but aside from that – there are all sorts of animals (foxes, bears, deer) in the area and you really have to watch out for wildlife – if alcohol is not a factor, he could very likely have swerved to avoid hitting an animal.

RIP young man.

Beyond tragic. Heart goes out to this poor young lad and his family and friends. In a blink on a fine Monday morning a life is lost and so many others are changed forever. Count yer blessings.

I know the fellow and his parents….makes me sick to my stomach to read this article.

Ive lived out in NN most of my life. Ive lost more than one friend in that very spot over the years. Young people plz listen when I ask you guys to slow down out here. There are hazards, kids and critters just waiting to surprise you, and the road isnt that great, or wide. Go race somewhere safer, this road has taken too many already, and there are lots of younger children playing around this neighborhood.

I have half a mind to try and get a memorial built out here, in memory of a few I knew and many I did not. Maybe would serve to remind and perhaps prevent yet another life from being cut short on this road.

Love and Peace, to the young man and his family. Our hearts and thoughts are with you.
