Rustad Heads Out on First Nations Jobs Trip

Sunday, August 4, 2013 @ 4:01 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister John Rustad will be making a trip to the northwest this week to talk about the job possibilities for First Nations resulting from the economic activity that’s gathering steam in the  region.

Rustad kicks off a four-day tour in Terrace on Tuesday and plans to meet with local community and First Nations leaders. He’ll be addressing Terrace City Council, the Terrace District Chamber of Commerce and the region’s business community to make sure that while industry works to provide jobs, revenue and other economic opportunities, it also understands what the government calls “its obligations and responsibilities to First Nations.”

The Liberal government’s BC Jobs Plan made a commitment to improving opportunities for the aboriginal community to participate in resource activity in their traditional territories. The province has reached 19 non-treaty agreements since the Jobs Plan was set in motion in 2011.
