Prince George, B.C.- It’s time.
It is opening day today for the annual fair in Prince George. While it is the 101st edition of the fair, it is the first year it is being held under its new name, the BC Northern Exhibition.

It is also the  first year the  Exhibition has had to  work around the  construction site of the Kin 1 which is  being developed for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.  "We have really had to pack  everything into a  smaller space" says Nancy Loreth, President of the Prince George  Agricultural and Historical  Society.

This year, the fair is back to a 4 day event, down from the five held last year for the centennial edition of the PGX.  There is a very good reason for that change says Loreth "It is  the midway.  West Coast Amusements   has a commitment  in the lower mainland, and  they  aren’t able to  get here and set up in time to allow for  a five day event.  So while it means the fair is one day  shorter, it also means  there is one less day of expenses to cover."

It has been a  challenging year for  the Exhibition,  as it lost it’s former general manager  (who moved on to another position) hired a new  manager but that didn’t last, so the  Board of Directors has really stepped up.  "So many of the Directors  re-arranged their lives in order to help out and  make sure the  Ex was ready" says Loreth.

It may be one day shorter, but there is still plenty to do and see with theme days, and entertainment in addition to the midway and exhibits.

Today  is  “Pioneers Day” so seniors ( 60 and over) get a break on the price of admission.   They will pay $5 instead of the regular $10.

Comments

Looks like a good time and I admire the efforts and planning to hold the event, but this year we are not going to attend. For a family of 4 the cost of the rides, admission and parking is about $250 after some food and refreshments. Don’t mean to be a party pooper but we’ll spend the day at the lake.

Horrible slogan.

I’ll be not going this year. This has gotten way too expensive for what it is offering.
