37 New Fires In P.G. Fire Centre

Monday, August 12, 2013 @ 1:14 PM
Prince George, B.C.- The weekend’s lightning storm  is believed to have been responsible for touching off most, if not all of the 37 new fires burning in the Prince George Fire Centre.

Most of the new fires are small, the largest being about 15 hectares and it is located about 40 kms south of McBride. This is the fire that was causing some visibility concerns along highway 16  near Tete Jaune Cache as heavy smoke wafted through the region on the weekend.

A large number of the new fires were sparked south of Mackenzie, with 13 of them located between Prince George and Vanderhoof. All of these fires are small, the largest being 2.8 hectares in size none are   interface fires so there are no structures in danger.
Prince George Fire Centre spokesperson, Dustin Eno says there is a concern about abandoned campfires.

“South of Prince George, abandoned campfires were found at the recreation sites on Francis Lake and Genevieve Lake” says Eno. While both campfires did not spark forest fires, Eno says it is extremely important that campers ensure the campfire is extinguished before they leave the campsite.
