Prince George, B.C. – Fire  and rescue peronnel are  in  hazmat mode as they clean up  a corrosive material that  spilled on  the Old Cariboo Highway this morning.  The material was  being transported on a flat deck truck that left the old Cariboo highway and went into the ditch.

The incident occurred just before 6.00 am. this morning between Johnson and Giscome Rd which is parallel to the airport runway, but fire fighters say the material is not air born.

Police say a number of vehicles drove through the spilled material, and if you did,  you are asked to go to the hospital immediately. A police office who went to the scene of the accident went to hospital after being exposed to the product.

What is contained in the corrosive material is not known.

Traffic is being detoured around the area.

If you Drove thru it??? Give me a break!

Is the airport closed and any idea how long the road will closed? I have a flight out this afternoon. The airport website doesn’t say anything about it…

I personally spoke to the fire department. If you HAD DIRECT CONTACT with the spill go in. If you only drove thru it you are fine

nu2PG, the airport runs parallel with Old Cariboo Hwy, and the runway is alittle bit of a distance from the hwy. I should think that the airport will not be closed, and if you take Hwy 97 S to Sintich Rd, that would be the only way to get to the Airport as this is 1 out of 2 ways to get to the Airport from Prince George

“I personally spoke to the fire department. If you HAD DIRECT CONTACT with the spill go in. If you only drove thru it you are fine”

Great, now we have two different versions. The one reported by 250NEWS as told to them by police and one from a poster who spoke to someone at the fire department.

A classic example of what not to do in such a case.

Stay with one story and do not confuse people in emergency cases such as this.

Lets assume that those on scene know what this stuff is. Then shouldnt it be up to Emergency Management BC to follow procedures based on what the content is and advise media to advise public of potential danger (if necessary)? Talking to a fireman is meaningless, he is not a chemical expert. Neither are the Police. Either of those can, at best, give an opinion of the danger. There will be procedures in place somewhere that should be pretty easy to follow.

I would like to hear the conversation at emergency when people showed up and said they had driven over some chemicals and they were told to go to emergency .

Is it safe to go to Costco ???

Interceptor, you may want to ask first if the fire department has any Hazmat specialists.. And yes they do have hazmat specialists specifically trained to deal with hazards waste, spills etc. so talking to a fireman can give you the correct information. Amazing the amount of people who have no clue what they are talking about on here. But then again that’s what makes it fun :)

Well there ya go – I am friends with three firemen and that has never come up. I learned something new :)
