Boys of Summer Undaunted at World Baseball Challenge

Friday, August 16, 2013 @ 4:07 PM
Prince George, B.C. – A brief period of thunderstorm activity rolled through the Prince George area this afternoon and, while it did drop a fair amount of rain on the Hart it did not dampen the enthusiasm at Citizen Field.

Jim Swanson, co-chair of the 2013 World Baseball Challenge, says the tournament’s 3pm game between the U.S. and Japan proceeded as scheduled. He says “we watched that system on the radar very closely and fortunately it avoided the area of the ball field.” There are some damp periods in the weekend weather forecast but Swanson says the grounds crew he has is fully experienced on handling wet weather in the wake of the schedule disruptions caused by rain at the 2011 WBC tournament. “We have a tarp that cost over $5,000 that covers every inch of dirt on the field, and we can get it rolled out very quickly.”

Swanson also says there’s a misconception out there that every game of the Challenge is sold out. “That’s not the case, in fact we’re only halfway to being sold out and there are plenty of seats, even for key games like Cuba and the States Saturday night at 7.”

The 7pm game tonight has 1 and 1 Chinese Taipei facing Team Canada as the Canadians look for their first win following two losing starts.  There is a 60% chance of showers tonight with the chance of an early evening severe thunderstorm.  Saturdasy looks to be mainly cloudy, 40% chance of showers while Sunday’s forecast is for showers and a high of 18.

Too bad that individual game tickets were sold ‘in person’; there might be bigger attendance if you didn’t have to buy iin a block, on line.
